It's really tough to get a good photo of my collages this time of year. I take them out to my driveway to get a shot in full sun. I found this to be the best method so you can clearly see all the tiny print and details that may be throughout. In February, it's usually cloudy and the sun barley comes out. I have to grab a photo when I can. When it does, the sun is low, even mid-day, which gives me glare no matter how much I angle the collage. And it's also cold! I need to take off my gloves to work the camera and my fingers freeze. Never the less, I'll make it work.

I put a pencil in this shot to give you an idea of how small some the pieces are in this Rooster. The eye is made up of nine tiny pieces of paper to within the red part. I stab the pieces with the tip of my exacting blade to place them. Otherwise, they would slip from my fingers.

I just received another photo of an original that I did a few years ago. It makes me happy to see it again. I love that it’s grouped with other coneflowers. Makes me hopeful of warmer days ahead. 🌸

While I work on a new chicken, someone sent me a photo of my chicken prints they had framed. The red one is a large print, 16x20. I think it looks great between the two yellow ones. I love seeing how people display my art.

I've been working on art that brings me peace and and sense of calm. That has been extremely challenging the last few days with all that's going on. Here's my latest piece. I did something similar that was thin and long. I placed it on the wall about my TV and now decided to keep it. I'll be taking this one to festivals, which I'm hoping will actually happen this year.

I really enjoy seeing how people frame my prints. This one is “Quarentine”. I made this collage back in April when when everything was closed. The frames looks fabulous against the navy wall.

It’s been a few weeks since I posted. I’m still in a 2020 funk. I started a few collages without finishing, then set them aside. Maybe I’ll rethink them at some point. My husband suggested doing an animal since I haven’t done one for a while. This past week, I worked on this fox. Feels good to complete one. He’s attacking a sad looking flower with 2020 in the petal. Subliminal.

I explain what was the inspiration for this one, the Mexican tradition of All Souls Day, and how the images in the collage relate to me. Made from bits of magazines.

My one and only in-person collage workshop this year. It was with a small group of friends who try all sorts of arts and crafts classes together. One owns a business and we used her large conference room for the class. It’s was a lot of fun and they did a great job with their collages!

Inspiration for the Art - Guitar Collage

Inspiration for the Art - Guitar Collage I forgot to post a video last week! This collage is loosely based on Jimi Hendrix. I explain what to look for and why I used tissue paper for the words.

You'll find this original at Hazel Tree Design Studio for the next month. I made this one earlier this year and haven't had the opportunity to take it out in public due to all canceled the art festivals. It's nice to know that there will be other eyes 👀 to see it in person, rather than just mine.

A question for you. As you know, or don’t know, I sell limited edition prints of my works. Do you care that the prints are signed, limited editions? For new collages that I haven’t printed up yet, I’m considering not signing or numbering them. I would sell them for slightly less. I have quality prints made with archival ink on acid free paper, so I can’t go too much less.

Another start over. I’ve been struggling with subjects lately. I start something and it becomes a chore, which sucks the creativity right out of me. I realized this weekend that I’m searching for peace. My mind aches from the political bs. I’m deeply saddened by the homes and life lost from the fires out west. I’m bothered by the lack of understanding on social media. I’m troubled by the impact of the Coronavirus: for those who’ve become sick, those who lost their lives, those who care for the sick, and the economic impact it has on our daily lives. It’s all too much. I need a peaceful moment.

This collage was once a start of a cow, which I have ripped off most of the paper. It will become a chair on a beach, looking towards the water. The ocean perhaps if I can pull it off. As I work on it, I’ll imagine the roar of the ocean; the taste of salt on my lips, my feet sinking in sand as I walk along the waters edge; and details I see when I examine the sand closely. This will bring me peace.

Inspiration for the Art - Monarchs in Flight

A coincidence? I made this video last week, not knowing that Monarchs would be in our area now. The last two days they are everywhere I look. I love seeing them float through my yard, dance in the trees, and land in the bushes, slowly flapping thier wings. I learned on the news that this time of year they migrate from Canada, fly over Lake Erie, then rest in Northeast Ohio before continuing their journey onwards to Mexico. In this collage, look for cars, watches, and bubbles that come from bits of magazines.

I’m attempting to work on two collages at the same time again by focusing on one every other day. The small one will be of Akron’s Civic theatre, the other a Flag honoring our military with quotes and photos, including my father who was in the Army and my Grandfather who served in WW II and Korea.

This was a challenge and a pain to work on. Too many straight lines and teeny tiny pieces. I prefer ripping my paper and not being so restricted. Never the less, I'm please how it turned out. For those not from around here, this is the Rock Hall from the back.

I don’t like what was happening with my cow. I was very “eh” about it. So I put him in my pile of partially completed collages to be reconsider for another day. I’m now trying a Cleveland landscape scene as viewed from Voinovich Park. It’s a challenge because straight lines are not my forte.

Eek! I accidentally glued my collage to the table and it is stuck. As I put on the layers of finishes, they oozed over the sides connecting it to the table. I never had that happen before. I was able to pry it apart with a screwdriver with no damage. I just need to shave off the excess glue on the back edges.

A Magazine Collage Artist

Long story short: Was a videographer for 35 years, had a jaw surgery, then woke up as an artist.

Whenever you meet someone new or hear of an event, there is always more to the person or the story than your first impression. Or, as the saying goes, "there's more than meets the eye". You'll find that to be true with my artwork which is created from torn and cut pieces of magazines. No paint is used. My style weaves a sense of realism with the subject and a sense of abstraction in the details. Each reflect my love for animals and the everyday experiences in my middle aged, mid-west, suburban life.
