As I slowly get away from the dark cloud that has been over me the past few months, I'm getting back to creating art. This one though was started back in December as my mother was becoming ill. You can see I was thinking of her with the image I found with a heart and the word "mom".

The last few months, I’ve been dealing with a few important things in my life and posting on social media seemed to be a very frivolous activity for me to be doing. Several of you reached out. I appreciate that you noticed and for your concern.

My husband had surgery for colon cancer and will be starting chemo soon. At the same time, my 92 year old mother’s health began to decline. After a hospital stay and nursing rehab, I moved her into my home with hospice care. She passed away last week.

I thought I would share one of my latest collages of a wave which is an analogy for this time in my life. I worked on this in November as my world started to fall apart. It reminds me of a Buddhist quote about life and death. I heard it on the show The Good Place, which is a silly comedy, but I found the final episode to be profound as they paraphrased this concept:

"Picture a wave. In the ocean. You can see it, measure it, its height, the way the sunlight refracts when it passes through. And it’s there. And you can see it, you know what it is. It’s a wave.
And then it crashes in the shore and it’s gone. But the water is still there. The wave was just a different way for the water to be, for a little while. The wave returns to the ocean, where it came from and where it’s supposed to be."

As I slowly wrap my head around things, I’ll get back to creating collages and posting more. I’m hoping to feeling renewed as spring approaches.

I call this one "Guilty" because he looks guilty for breaking the glasses.

I have a favorite piece in each collage. For this one, I like the white blazer. It's just a fun, random object that gets lost when you look at the full collage.

I’m on the third floor, in the Templar Room of the Screw Factory in Lakewood, for their Fall Show. I have a small space, so it’s just prints this weekend. Apparently, they made screws here at one time and Templar was a car. I didn’t know that. Maybe they made that here too? There are photos of it everywhere. I’m here tonight from 6-10 and again tomorrow from 10-4.

Ocean Wave #1 24x30 I'm naming this one #1 because it was fun to do, so I may do another. Things to look for are images of fish, seahorse, a dog, maps, wallpaper with pearls and more.

Currently on the easle: a wave. I’m using magazine paper, wall paper, and tissue paper. I’m also using a hole punch on paper to create water drops. The only problem is that it’s hard to know when to stop. I can constantly add more strips and dots.

I sold this one recently at Kent Art in the Park. This collage was a lot more complicated than it needed to be. First, all the thinly cut lines for the fins and tail were a bear to create. I wanted each piece to end in a sharp point. I can't remember how many attempts it took me to get it to look that way. Then, I wanted the top fish's tail to be under the bottom fish, but the top fish's side fin to be on top of both tails. It took a lot of plotting as I worked on it. With that said, I may torture myself again another Koi collage at some point.

A few fun details on the peacock: His eye is made up of an image of a sofa's leather rolled arm surrounded by pebbles. You will also find lizard skin and sequins. His beak is made up of watch gears. The neck has denim clothing and a blue brick wall. The fun part of making these collages is finding interesting images.

I've sold a few originals over the past month and I love to see where they ultimately live. Here's the peacock in an office. It looks wonderful with the blue wall in the room. It really pops. The new owner says it makes her happy to come to work and see them everyday. That makes me happy to hear that. The horses are prints.

Made In Ohio Festival showcases handmade arts and crafts at Hale Farm and Village

Renee Flynn, the Made in Ohio Festival producer, featured my Rock Hall collage the on Fox 8 morning show along with products from a few other vendors. It’s about 4 minutes in. Someone stoop by my booth yesterday and said he watched it n his 60” TV. When they showed a close up, he said it was very cool to see it so large. That would be fun to see.

Over 150 Ohio artists and craftspeople will be set up at historic Hale Farm and Village Labor Day weekend selling their handmade products. It's the Made in Ohio Festival and Fox 8's Natalie Herbick learned more about it from the woman who created it Renee Flynn. www.MadeinOhioFestival.com

Cat art made from magazines and then altered digitally

I'm playing around with photoshop. I took my original cat collage and made several changes in photoshop which include blue eyes and lots of computer and crypto currency images. I was inspired by the Ben Franklin image in the original cat and everything I'm reading about NFTs and crypto currency, something I'm not very comfortable with at the moment. It's a little hard to see the changes in the video, but there are lots of them.

Another one of those that I say, "I think I'm done". I can always keep adding flowers and bees. I'll let it sit for a few days before I start to add the finishes. This is similar to a long one I did and I decided to keep that one. I had this odd size canvas sitting against a wall and thought I would the same thing, but added a bunch of bees. I'm calling it "Birds and Bees". 15"x30"

Every time I start a collage, I tell myself to keep it simple. Then, I go ahead and torture myself with tiny pieces. For this one, I’m making several bees with magazine and tissue paper that include antennas about the size of an eyelash. I have to make twice as many because the pieces fall to the ground, never to be seen again, before I can place it on my collage.

Getting ready for the Akron Arts Expo this weekend at Hardesty Park. I rarely see my prints framed so I framed a couple to take with me. I like how they look with a mat. I hope I package them well so I don’t break the glass as I travel there. Which is only 10 minutes from home, so I should be fine.

A Magazine Collage Artist

Long story short: Was a videographer for 35 years, had a jaw surgery, then woke up as an artist.

Whenever you meet someone new or hear of an event, there is always more to the person or the story than your first impression. Or, as the saying goes, "there's more than meets the eye". You'll find that to be true with my artwork which is created from torn and cut pieces of magazines. No paint is used. My style weaves a sense of realism with the subject and a sense of abstraction in the details. Each reflect my love for animals and the everyday experiences in my middle aged, mid-west, suburban life.

last october i had the pleasure of participating in a "painting with paper" workshop taught by local collage artist Deborah Shapiro Art. it was the fastest 6 hours out i've had to myself! this coneflower was the first collage project i had ever done completely with magazine papers. the biggest takeaway was the importance of using light and shadow in creating art, which is probably the area in which i need to work on the most. #jbjonesart #collage #magazinecollage #pinkgreenblue #coneflower
