Here's another favorite piece. At art festivals, I like to ask kids to try to find the duck. Most parents take on the challenge instead.

I’m working on another wave. This time the background will be in gray because there are a lot of fun images I can find in that shade. I’ve been adding tissue paper to the skies on my waves to give it some separation, but I may not on this one. I don’t want the gray to be diffused. All the images is what makes it fun.

Collage Art Close Up of a Window

I always have a favorite piece in my collages. For this one, it is the 1940ish photo of the woman and the dog. I also like the dove on the floor, on the left next to the wheel. I thought it was odd and had to add it. For Clevelanders, you can see the Terminal Tower in the lower right quadrant of the window.

I haven’t heard this song from Wet Willie in decades, but it was on the radio as drove through the rain to the last day of my last outdoor festival for 2022. I thought it was appropriate. If you are over a certain age, google it. You remember it when you hear it. Funny how I could sing along even though it’s been years. The stuff we store in our brains.🙄.

“Keep on smilin' through the rain, laughin' at the pain
Rollin with the changes til the sun comes out again”

I’m not OCD, but it is a little maddening this weekend. My booth is on a hill that slopes to the back right corner. No matter how I tried to adjust the tent, all my art is hanging askew. Oh well. This is my last outdoor show for the season. Stop by booth 113 at Kent Art in the Park.

(Sing in your best Karen Carpenter voice)
Talkin' to myself and feelin' old
Sometimes I'd like to quit
Nothin' ever seems to fit
Hangin' around
Nothin' to do but frown
Rainy days during Festival Days always get me down

Sold the original of this little guy at the market at Pinecrest this past weekend. I refer to him as the "Green Rooster", but the title of this piece is actually "Joey". My other roosters have names, so when I created this one, I was at a lost for a name. At the last minute, decided to name him after one of my husband's friends for absolutely no good reason. I always write the title on the back of my collages. In case you have an original, it's on the wood frame under the brown paper. I'll miss seeing this one, but I know he's gone to a home where he will be adored.

I'm currently adding the varnish to Ocean Wave #3 and hope it will be ready for this weekend at Cain Park Art Festival. I enjoyed my trip to the Worthington Art Festival. Thank you to everyone who came out to the show. The old downtown was great to walk around and have dinner after the event. Several of my originals found new homes in the Columbus! Here's just a few. Since I had a rough winter, I have not made art in months. I now need to lock myself in the studio and get busy making more for upcoming festivals.

It’s an early morning at Worthington. My friend Laurie is traveling with me to help out. She’s wiping down my works. My last show was a little dusty.

I recently made a small collage to help me get back into creating. I liked the stone images for something that should be lightweight for the sails. It's so hot today, it would be nice to be out on the water, so I thought I'd post this.

Note- my last sad post. I promise to perk up after this one.

I’m getting back to making collages after a difficult winter with the loss of my mother. Creating art makes me feel good. This is another cat face in honor of my 16 year old cat that died the week of my mother’s funeral. I’m going to hide a photo of him in here somewhere.

As I slowly get away from the dark cloud that has been over me the past few months, I'm getting back to creating art. This one though was started back in December as my mother was becoming ill. You can see I was thinking of her with the image I found with a heart and the word "mom".

The last few months, I’ve been dealing with a few important things in my life and posting on social media seemed to be a very frivolous activity for me to be doing. Several of you reached out. I appreciate that you noticed and for your concern.

My husband had surgery for colon cancer and will be starting chemo soon. At the same time, my 92 year old mother’s health began to decline. After a hospital stay and nursing rehab, I moved her into my home with hospice care. She passed away last week.

I thought I would share one of my latest collages of a wave which is an analogy for this time in my life. I worked on this in November as my world started to fall apart. It reminds me of a Buddhist quote about life and death. I heard it on the show The Good Place, which is a silly comedy, but I found the final episode to be profound as they paraphrased this concept:

"Picture a wave. In the ocean. You can see it, measure it, its height, the way the sunlight refracts when it passes through. And it’s there. And you can see it, you know what it is. It’s a wave.
And then it crashes in the shore and it’s gone. But the water is still there. The wave was just a different way for the water to be, for a little while. The wave returns to the ocean, where it came from and where it’s supposed to be."

As I slowly wrap my head around things, I’ll get back to creating collages and posting more. I’m hoping to feeling renewed as spring approaches.

I have a favorite piece in each collage. For this one, I like the white blazer. It's just a fun, random object that gets lost when you look at the full collage.

I’m on the third floor, in the Templar Room of the Screw Factory in Lakewood, for their Fall Show. I have a small space, so it’s just prints this weekend. Apparently, they made screws here at one time and Templar was a car. I didn’t know that. Maybe they made that here too? There are photos of it everywhere. I’m here tonight from 6-10 and again tomorrow from 10-4.

Currently on the easle: a wave. I’m using magazine paper, wall paper, and tissue paper. I’m also using a hole punch on paper to create water drops. The only problem is that it’s hard to know when to stop. I can constantly add more strips and dots.

I sold this one recently at Kent Art in the Park. This collage was a lot more complicated than it needed to be. First, all the thinly cut lines for the fins and tail were a bear to create. I wanted each piece to end in a sharp point. I can't remember how many attempts it took me to get it to look that way. Then, I wanted the top fish's tail to be under the bottom fish, but the top fish's side fin to be on top of both tails. It took a lot of plotting as I worked on it. With that said, I may torture myself again another Koi collage at some point.

A Magazine Collage Artist

Long story short: Was a videographer for 35 years, had a jaw surgery, then woke up as an artist.

Whenever you meet someone new or hear of an event, there is always more to the person or the story than your first impression. Or, as the saying goes, "there's more than meets the eye". You'll find that to be true with my artwork which is created from torn and cut pieces of magazines. No paint is used. My style weaves a sense of realism with the subject and a sense of abstraction in the details. Each reflect my love for animals and the everyday experiences in my middle aged, mid-west, suburban life.

last october i had the pleasure of participating in a "painting with paper" workshop taught by local collage artist Deborah Shapiro Art. it was the fastest 6 hours out i've had to myself! this coneflower was the first collage project i had ever done completely with magazine papers. the biggest takeaway was the importance of using light and shadow in creating art, which is probably the area in which i need to work on the most.
