Dear customers of Lay’s Guitar Shop and The Loft,

We know that many of you in Ohio, the country and around the world are anxious to get back to “normal”. Many states are taking progressive steps to reopen their economies. In Ohio, the Consumer, Retail & Services industries will be allowed to open on Tuesday, May 12th, with restrictions. We will be opening as well. However we will be following the governments mandatory and recommended guidelines.

Therefore there will be changes to how we operate going forward.

- No Walk-Ins
- Appointments for drop-off and pick-up are necessary
- Call to set an appointment – (330-848-1392)
- Please come prepared to wear a face covering
- Limit to 1 person in for repair and 1 person for shopping in the Loft showroom
- Time limit of 5-10 min. for drop-off/pick-up in the shop
- Time limit of 30 min. in the Loft showroom
- No tours or entrance to employee areas. Unfortunately that means no visits or “hanging out”

Please call for an appointment (330-848-1392). We will take down all pertinent information and have an estimate ready for you when dropping of your instrument. Please ring the door bell at the front door and we will meet you to give you the estimate and take in your instrument. We will examine the instrument and if further clarification is needed, we will give you a call to discuss. We will use the same basic procedure for pick-up. In most cases it will not be necessary to enter the lobby.

We know these changes are very different than our normal operating procedures, however we feel they are necessary to protect you and our workers. We feel these changes will actually be a benefit to all as we will be able to concentrate on repairing your guitar and offer better quality service to you, our customers!

We thank you for your trust, confidence and business as you allow us to take care of your beloved instruments.

I was obsessed with Nirvana around 1993/1994. I wanted a fender mustang so badly because of course that was the guitar Cobain used. One day in March 1994 in the Akron Beacon Journal classified ads I saw a listing for a 1964 daphne blue Fender mustang for 175 bucks. Easily 400 bucks cheaper then what they were worth at the time. My dad drove me to this guys house and I bought the guitar.
Cobain killed himself a few weeks later.
It was my prized possession.

A few years later I’m playing in my friend David’s garage and I drop the f**king thing and smash the enamel and paint and dent the body. I was so f**king bummed about it. The thing was mint and I just f**ked it up. I decided around this time to trade it for a Jazz bass and telecaster. I traded with my buddy Andy. He loved it but eventually needed money and sold it to his brother Matt who covered the f**king thing in stickers and traded it ultimately for a NECK TATTOO.
The neck tattoo artist took it to a friend of ours in town (Dan Johnson who is now Dan’s guitar tech) to sell it for him. He posted it on EBay and it sold to someone.

So a few weeks with my 40th birthday approaching I thought I should get myself a 1964 daphne blue mustang. I found one listed on Reverb that has been refinished by Lay’s guitar shop in Akron Ohio and it’s daphne blue the seller is in Texas.... I bought it. I just thought there is a chance some how this is mine. The photos didn’t show the area where I dropped it but I thought hey there is a chance.

I got the guitar a few weeks ago and it has the same damage to the body. I got my guitar back for my 40th birthday.

We look forward to seeing you soon...and hang in there!

This is not so much a post about working on guitars or anything but, more so to show you the capture of the rarely seen, lumbersome but yet graceful, resident jokester Larry enjoying some Chinese food from down the street. This is Larry’s first full meal since he’s been on a strict diet of nothing but bacon cheeseburgers. You can really tell how the bacon cheeseburger diet has been working for Larry by his his slim figure and six pack abs. We are just kidding…we love Ol’ Larry. He stops in every now and again to work on his own guitars and fill the shop with his witty humor.

About Us

Virgil Lay started Lay’s Guitar Shop in Akron, Ohio, in 1962. Our store has been serving amateur and professional musicians nationwide ever since. Virgil worked on instruments for such players as Jack Bruce, Phil Keaggy, Joe Walsh and bands such as Bad Company and The Outlaws. Jimmy Page‘s Les Paul #1 had its neck shaved in our shop.

Dan Shinn, the current owner, started working for Virgil Lay in 1979. He acquired the guitar repair shop from Virgil in the late ’80s and to this day upholds the reputation for high quality repairs and restorations that have been the hallmark of Lay’s Guitar Shop. Under Dan’s management, Lay’s Guitar Shop has not only upheld the high standards set by Virgil Lay, but has expanded the business to accommodate an international market. The is due to our finish and restoration department, headed by Joel Shinn for over 25 years.

sent PM ... anyone there .?
I can't speak highly enough of Lay's Guitar Shop! I bought a 2012 American Fender Select Telecaster (Violin Burst) for my son in 2012 (the year that he was born). My plan is to give it to him on his 18th birthday. In July of 2019, while my family and I were away on vacation, we suffered a hot water leak from a faucet in the upstairs master bathroom and the water flowed throughout the house for at least seven days and ended up in the unfinished part of the basement. The guitar was in its case just beyond the door that separates the unfinished and the finished parts of the basement. Water had unfortunately started creeping in to the finished part of the basement and even though the carpet absorbed some of it, the guitar was under a couch and the bottom of the case was unfortunately wet. Initially, it seemed like the guitar was unaffected but after a few weeks, I ordered a replacement case from G&G Quality Case (another truly outstanding company), and when I went to put the guitar in its replacement case, my wife and I noticed some surface "dots" on the top of the guitar. In tears and in despair, I reached out to Fender and explained this delicate situation but I was told that they are not equipped to address such matters. I had the guitar assessed locally in a few reputable shops that were referred to me by Fender but there was nothing that could be done to rescue the guitar from the likely organic substance that breached the finish. Was it mold? Was it the nitrocellulose finish? Was it a reaction that happened from the exposure to sustained humidity? How deep did it penetrate the finish? After a bit of extensive and exhaustive research, I found Lay's Guitar Shop. I reached out to them and spoke with Dan Shinn who is high up in my list of most awesome people! I packaged the guitar and sent it out to Lay's Guitar Shop. Of all the damage that my house incurred, the priceless item that I most care about is this guitar for my son. With utmost care, dedication, and professionalism, Dan and crew were able to restore the guitar to the original condition and I have no words to describe my gratitude to them. I am writing this post/review/comment in case that anyone who runs into any similar misfortune can rest assured that this is without a doubt the place where you can feel confident that they will do their very best to keep putting smiles on people's faces. Yes, I'm making a big deal about a material possession that I proposed to myself that I would care for and hand it to my son in an unused, cared for, and mint condition when he turns 18. Lay's Guitar Shop preserved and saved my plan and I will forever remain their customer with endless praise and appreciation. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
One more thank you to Dan and Joel and the crew at Lay’s for building me the nicest SG Custom I’ve ever laid eyes on. If you can dream it they will build it.
Thank you Stevie and Dan! I love it. Lay’s Guitar Shop & The Loft are the best.
Three Lay’s beauties. Looks like Neapolitan ice cream.
Master-built by Lay's, designed by CreamTone, and inspired by Elvis! 😎 https://www.creamtone.com/products/creamtone-speedway-jazzcaster-original-build-by-lays-and-creamtone
Thanks for setting up my Samick Greg Bennett Altramatic I played out with Hudson Run on Winks Family Restaurant s last weekend of business. Thanks for making this guitar so amazing
The gang at Lay's Guitar shop knocked this re-finish out of the ball park!! Many thanks the the team in the shop and to Todd for putting up with nagging phone calls every week for pics of the progression. Cheers fellas! Thanks SO much!
Legit services from extremely knowledgeable technicians and craftsmen! I moved further away from Akron and still make the drive to have my guitars serviced here (or drool in the Loft)!
Thanks Dan !!!
Join us in October!
Wow.. they took my 1979 Les Paul and made it sound better than I ever thought capable with their complete set up...these guys are worth every penny! They also take the time to chat with you and never rush you out of the store even though they are mega busy..
