Manuscript Book of Hours calendar leaf for the month of November, written in French with dark brown, red, gold & blue ink in lettre batarde script on animal vellum. (122x90mm).

Large illuminated ''KL'' initials (abbreviations for KALENDS). For sister leaf see Blackburn Collection, Cleveland Museum of Art, pl. 52.

France (possibly Loire Valley), c. 1470.

Illuminated roundels show labor of the month (feeding hogs) & verso, zodiacal sign (per the 1470 calendar) of Sagittarius. Major feast days include: St. Marcellus (3rd), St. Herculanus (7th), Four crowned martyrs (8th), St. Theodore (9th), St. Martin (11th), St. Faustus (15th), St. Columban (20th), St. Cecelia (22nd), St. Catherine (25th), and St. Andrew (30th). Just really love this leaf from a medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 14 lines, of red-ruled Latin in dark brown ink, written in fine gothic script on animal vellum. (103 x 73mm – 4 x 2 3/8’’)

England, c. 1440 (likely Syon Abbey, by a member of the Bridgettine Order).

It has considerable devotional wear and some chips and tears along edges.

The exceptional historiated five-line illuminated initial in green and blue with white penwork and having an internal miniature painting of All Saints. Christ is depicted standing with golden rays holding an Orb in left hand and blessing the gathered saints with his right hand. The initial continues into the margin in a beautiful floral design with a lion-like head holding floral stems in mouth – in colors of blue, pink, green, and burnished gold. The dramatic and colorful historiated initial depicts, with unusual Byzantine influence, the Madonna and Child in a Grotto Exceptionally ornate border in colorful floral motif with burnished gold bezants. Available for sale on our website, item IM-13049, Cepuckett.com.

The historiated “C” begins a prayer for Sunday in the Octave of Christmas: “Concede (the remaining letters the word are found to the right of the painting written vertically down the side of the miniature: O, N, C, E, De) quesumus omnipotens deus…” (Grant, we beseech thee, O Almighty God, that we who groan under the old captivity of sin, may be freed therefrom by the new birth of thine Only Begotten Son).

Decorative leaf from a medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 15 lines of text, ruled in red, written in Latin with dark brown and red ink in gothic script Flanders, c. 1450-75.

The historiated initial depicts the Flight into Egypt: The Virgin Mary is shown wearing blue robes while sitting upon a donkey and holding the Christ Child on their journey down a road. The three-line historiated initial begins: “Deus in…” (Incline unto my aid O God…). The two-line illuminated “V” begins the hymn Veni , Creator Spiritus “Veni…” (Come, Holy Spirit, Creator blest, and in our souls take up Thy rest; come with Thy grace and heavenly aid to fill the hearts which Thou hast made).

Large illuminated “KL” initials (abbreviations for KALENDS) are in red, blue & white on gold ground. Days are in gold, and Saints’ names and Feasts in gold, red, or blue.

The three finely worked miniatures along the side depict the labor of the month (sowing), the zodiacal sign, as per the calendar in 1490-1510 (Scorpio), & a floral decoration in the center. Available for sale on our website, item IM-11787, cepuckett.com.

Printed and published in July 1493 by Anton Koberger. Folio XIX. (sheet size: 450 x 305mm – 17 ¾ x 12’’)

The first Bible printed in the city of Nuremberg. Printed the year of Martin Luther’s birth and considered the best German Bible up until Luther’s.

Beautiful historiated initial excised from a highly illuminated manuscript Choir Book. Executed by hand on animal parchment with tempera and heavily burnished gold. (140 x 150mm - 5.6 x 6.0").

On verso are vestiges of black square note music on a red four-line stave with rotunda script in black. France, c. 1530. Available for sale on our website, item IM-4607, CEPuckett.com.

A handsome miniature in fine condition from what must have been a truly deluxe manuscript choir book - perhaps made for a Royal Chapel - by a Parisian artist. Christ is shown as the central full-length figure, holding a golden orb surmounted with a golden cross, and with golden rays emanating toward heaven from his head. To Christ’s left is St. Paul holding a book and his attribute, a sword. St. Peter is to Christ’s right – holding his attribute, a key. In the background are ten of the apostles (Judas being absent).

Book of Hours leaf printed and hand-painted in the workshop of Germain Hardouyn, Paris, c. 1532.The large miniature painting depicts, John the Evangelist on Patmos Island, where the Roman Emperor Domitian exiled him and where he received his Vision of the Apocalypse and wrote the Book of Revelation. The elegant puzzle initial in red & blue with elaborate internal & external geometric "puzzle design" (in the Moorish influenced Mudejar style) in intricate red & violet penwork; two elaborate knot-work (cadel) initials heightened with yellow with intricate internal design in violet.

Continuous manuscript bifolium leaves from a Book of Hours, France, circa 1490-1510. Unusual vibrant and elaborate panel borders with colorful floral and gemstone motif on sable or gold ground with one containing a whimsical dragon-like creature dancing in the margin.
