I am not a sketch artist my any means. As I’m sure y’all can tell from this sketch to final. But I go through seasons where I have pattern ideas pop in my head at random. Early on, I would tell myself I would remember what they were without sketching them. *insert 100s of forgotten ideas here*🙃. Now I keep sketch books everywhere! Anywho here’s a sketch I did a while ago and the final wood patterned wallhangings created from it.

07/14/2022

It’s Thursday!!! I don’t have the full play by play of me creating these new pieces because I started them a LOOOOONG time ago. When I was creating them I could not figure out how to finish the design. I try my best to avoid being frustrated in my creative space because it is my place of peace and joy, so I put them aside to finish later. Welcome to later! I’ll reveal them finished next week! Enjoy the sunshine ☀️ 💗

Here’s a closer look🧐 at the wall hanging from my last video and my first successful resin mini collection! I’m still so excited about learning the resin process. Video of what I’ve learned so far coming soon!

05/20/2022

I used to cut glass whenever I wanted to add a lil pop of color to my wood pieces. I looooooved it but I had to stop because I would consistently break the glass whenever I had to transport pieces 😩. So I had to pivot. Now whenever I want to add a lil pop of color to a wood design I use acrylic paint. It hasn’t failed me yet!

04/14/2022

It’s Thursday!!! Folks always ask me how long projects take and I never know🙃. So today I timed myself. Time spent so far…🥁…4 hours. Of course the bulk of that was spent on staple removal. Every time the staples remind me that I am not in fact a patient person😆. See y’all next week!

I’m working on some new pieces 🧵🥽🪵🔨. In the mean time, I’ll be circling back around to virtually display pieces that are still available in studio and online at www.jburgessdesigns.com. Here’s a mini fabric bowl from this years Black history collection.

04/07/2022

It’s Thursday!!! So I’ve had a wicker basket hanging pendant light at my house for a few years now. I love it. About a month ago, I looked at it and thought “Ooooooo I should try to make hanging lights from my fabric bowls!” So I did! Here’s my very first one! I finished it today, but I was engulfed in an audio book and I forgot to record it 🙃. So just enjoy this lil video of the finished product. 😆💗

03/31/2022

It’s Thursday!!!! Here’s what I worked on this week. Not a dag on thing!!! I had a week of deep restorative rest…the kind that’s good for the soul. Also joy…the kind that comes from sunsets and sunrises, baby crabs and flocks of herons, and waves that create bubbles that blow along the sand. 💗💗💗

03/31/2022

Throwing it back to this fabric bowl. Most of the time, I start creating with no plan in mind. I just get started and see where the wood or fabric take me in the moment. 🗣THAT WAS NOT HOW I STARTED THIS HERE BOWL. I had a plan but my plan wasn’t planning😆. That’s actually how the twisted detailing at the top of the bowl came to be…it was a moment of pivot. And baaaaybaaaay pivots can lead to beautiful places. 💚💚💚

03/24/2022

It’s Thursday!!! Trying something new. Any guesses 👀???

03/22/2022

A couple of weeks ago someone came into my studio and told me they were going to steal one of my designs. Literally they used the word steal 🙃. I addressed it when it happened. But juuuuust in case there are other folk out there thinking of stealing from other artists/creatives. Here’s a word of advice. If you see someone else’s work and fall in love with it. Buy it. If you are unable to purchase it, tell them how much you love it and encourage them to keep bringing beauty into the world. If they are anything like me they’ve spent time learning, thinking through the details, collaborating, practicing, and praying, all to bring their creative dreams to reality. Honor their intellectual property. Tempted to steal their designs??? Don’t. Instead sit with yourself. Consider the things that delight you and bring you joy… the things you love and are drawn to. Learn them and create in a way only you can…from that space.

Also shout out to @goods_here who helped create the original design for these pillows. 💗💗💗

03/18/2022

It’s Thursday!!! Yall🗣 I HAVE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH MUDLCOTH!!! 💗💗💗 I mean…how could I not?

Good morning! Pattern mixing and monochromatic layers are my favorite 2 ways to incorporate fabrics for upholstery. When working in monochromatic layers, I add a couple of textures for depth and visual interest. Duck cloth will always be my ride or die, but recently I have really been loving working with cotton velvet too! Both were included in the making of this footstool. It’s an unusual fabric combo but they compliment each other sooooo well!

Here’s another way to use a fabric bowl! Ain’t it cuuuuuute?! I still have a few available that will fit a potted plant and a few plant stands. Interested??? Head on over to www.jburgessdesigns.com

O and I forgot one step. Be sure to look at the fabric bowl dimensions and also measure the diameter of your saucer/drip pan and pot to be sure they’ll fit together perfectly.

I think the thing that amazes me the most is that Jessica Skinner can look at something old, unwanted, and beaten down, and imagine something beautiful that it can become. That vision is something unique to a creator. The ability to envision a masterpiece from what someone else might view as junk, then to actually bring it to life with time and extreme detail, is what makes you the most talented person. I’m still in awe, and excited to see the next big thing🙌🏾💯 Check out and follow JBurgess Designs ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #blackbusiness #supportblackbusiness
