Students auditioning for Oklahoma: Ever wish you had someone to play piano for you to practice your audition? Here's the next best thing!

On your smartphone or digital device, go to the app store and download an app called RMS Mix. When it asks for a name and email, use "Brian Mueller" and "[email protected]". You can download piano accompaniment for every song in Oklahoma, legally and for free. We have paid for the right to download this software to as many mobile devices as we want for the duration of our rehearsal and show process.

You will need to scan the QR code attached here in order to get this to work.

You can choose which song you want to use. ("Oh What a Beautiful Morning" is unhelpfully labeled "Opening Act I".)

Note that when you first open the app, a bit of music from the opera Carmen is pre-loaded. Tap the icon of music notes in a box and select Oklahoma instead.

Practice away!

11/28/2017

Preparing solo excerpts for auditions:
See the below list for exact guidelines for each solo.

Please be ready with the one excerpt (besides Oh, What a Beautiful Morning) you think you are best suited to, if you are interested in a solo singing role. Focus your efforts on that one song, though it wouldn't hurt to at least be familiar with as many other solos as possible. If Mr. Mueller wants to hear you sing another, he will tell you at auditions and ask for it at callbacks, so you have a little time to prepare.

Scenes/dialogue will come up at callbacks. It's not a bad idea to familiarize yourself with these now, but they won't be a part of your initial audition unless you know you can't come to the Thursday callback.

Songs by character:

Guys' roles:

Curly: Prepare the Surrey With the Fringe on Top. Start at the beginning of the song and go through the first four pages, ending at "...keer to swop fer that shiny little surrey with the fringe on the top". Also prepare the reprise of People Will Say We're in Love (the entirety of both pages; take the bottom notes on the second page at the end of song), though this is more for purposes of the callback.

Will: All four pages of Kansas City, first verse only. ("Everything's up to date" through "as fur as they c'n go!")

Jud: The end of the song Lonely Room, covering everything on both uploaded pages. ("The floor creaks... a womern to call my own").

Carnes: Sing "The Farmer and the Cowman", pages 1 and 2 (starting with "The farmer and the cowman should be friends", going until "farmers dance with the ranchers' gals" at the bottom of the second page.)

Ike: Farmer and the Cowman pages 3 and 4, starting "And when this territory is state" and going through " and act like brothers".

Gals' roles:

Laurey: Prepare "People Will Say We're in Love (Reprise)" - every line on both pages, even the ones written just for Curly. Take the high notes at the end of song, if possible. You may also choose to learn "Out of My Dreams", from the beginning ("Out of your dreams and into his arms...") until "into a dream come true" at the end of the second page; where there is harmony, take the top note, which is the melody.

Ado Annie: Learn "I Cain't Say No", from the beginning page "I'm jist a girl who cain't say no..." until the bottom of the third page ("How c'n I be what I ain't? I cain't say no!") for initial auditions. The fourth page is more likely to come up at callbacks ("Whut you goin' to do when a feller..." up through "spit in his eye?")

Aunt Eller: Farmer and the Cowman, page 5 - from "I'd like to teach you all..." until "if I ain't jist as good!"

Female soloists: Learn "Out of My Dreams", both pages.

Oklahoma! CHARACTER/CASTING BREAKDOWN

MALE ROLES

Curly McClain - High Baritone C# to F#, a cowboy with an expansive, charismatic personality and a sense of humor. Strong enough to court and win strong-willed farm girl Laurey.
Songs: Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’, Surrey with the Fringe on Top, People Will Say We’re in Love, Poor Jud Is Dead, Oklahoma! - About 130 lines

Will Parker - Bari-tenor Eb to F, cowboy. Enthusiastic, strong, looks toward the future, but not an Einstein. Wins wandering Ado Annie from his rival, Ali Hakim. Must be a strong mover. The ability to learn to throw a lasso and do rope tricks a strong plus.
Songs: All Er Nothin’, Kansas City; sung lines in The Farmer and the Cowman, Entrance of Ensemble - About 80 lines

Jud Fry - Bass-Baritone, D to C#. Dark, brooding loner farmhand who longs for Laurey. Strong acting a must; the audience has to be both creeped out by and somewhat sympathetic to Jud. Some comedy smarts, stage combat ability a plus. Solo song and duet; no dance.
Songs: Lonely Room, Pore Jud Is Daid - About 65 lines

Ali Hakim - Over-the-top Persian peddler with an eye for the ladies, especially Ado Annie. Comic accent (middle eastern, New York?), huge personality. Hand-smooching lady-killer; sweeps Annie off her feet with his marathon kisses. One solo number, but, honestly, singing takes a back seat to laughs in this role. Ideally a person of color.
Song: It’s a Scandal! It’s an Outrage! - About 100 lines

Judge Andrew Carnes - Baritone or tenor, E to F. Irascible father of the incorrigibly flirtatious Ado Annie. Most days, he looks at the world down the barrel of his shotgun. Comedy skills needed here, some singing. Song: The Farmer and the Cowman, sung lines in Oklahoma! - About 40 spoken lines

Ike Skidmore - Farmer - Range: G to F - either high tenor or low bass, sings lines in Farmer and the Cowman and Oklahoma! - About 15 lines

Dream Curly - Portrays Curly in Act I Ballet sequence. Might be played by same actor as Curly. Extensive dancing, no
dialogue or singing.

Cord Elam - The sheriff of the territory. Small singing lines in Oklahoma! - About 20 spoken lines

Fred - Cowboy, sings 2 short solo lines in Oklahoma!, about 6 lines

Slim - Cowboy, maybe 15 lines or so

Mike - 2 lines

Joe - 3 lines

Tom - 2 lines

A farmer - 2 lines

And up to 6 more ensemble men - Some singing, dancing and acting.

FEMALE ROLES

Aunt Eller - Mezzo, Low D to A. Primarily an acting role, with some singing. Laurey's sensible 50-something aunt, wise, practical but with a ready sense of humor.
Songs: verses in The Farmer and the Cowman, and solo lines in Oklahoma!, Kansas City and The Surrey with
the Fringe on Top. - About 115 lines

Laurey Williams - Lyric Soprano, C# to high A. Lovely and feisty, a farmer's daughter in love with cowboy Curley. Romantic, yet confident, independent and strong.
Songs: Many a New Day, People Will Say We're in Love, Out of My Dreams, and solo lines in The Surrey with the Fringe on Top, Laurey's Entrance and Oklahoma! - About 100 lines

Ado Annie Carnes - Mezzo-Soprano/Belter, Middle C to high E. Comic gifts a plus in portraying this warm-hearted gal whose romances never give her father Judge Carnes a moment of peace. Falls for the peddler Ali Hakim, but ultimately is won by the
determined courtship of Will Parker.
Songs: I Can't Say No!, All er Nothin' and various solo lines. - About 90 spoken lines

Gertie Cummings - Usually portrayed by an actress whose voice is in the soprano range, but not a solo singing role. Comic character with a supremely annoying giggle who has set her eye on Curly. About 14 lines.

Dream Laurie - Dancer role, ideally with strong ballet training. Extended feature during the Dream Ballet that closes Act I. Extensive, expressive dance, no singing or dialogue.

Ellen - Laurie’s friend - Sings 1 solo line in Out of My Dreams, 4 spoken lines

Kate - Laurie’s friend - Sings 2 solo lines in Out of My Dreams, 1 spoken line

Vivian - Laurie’s friend - Tells the other girls’ fortunes; 1 spoken line, one sung line in Out of My Dreams

Virginia - Laurie’s friend - sings one line in Out of My Dreams

Emma - 1 line

2 girls - 1 line each

And up to 10 more ensemble women - Some singing, dancing, acting. Especially interested in actresses with dance training for the ballet sequence - but not necessary for most ensemble roles.
