So happy to be part of "Pulparazzi: Painting with Pulp", curated by Joan Hall at the Jamestown Art Center, on view 07/12 – 08/17.

In my installation, "Blue", I’ve replicated the algae that Anna Atkins used in her book, "Photographs of British Algae (1843-53)" using paper pulp that I’ve pigmented blue to reference Atkins’ original cyanotypes. The resulting specimens are pinned to the walls as documentation of Atkins’ process and acknowledge the botanical/scientific pursuit of classification and dissemination of species.

Special thanks to Steve Lenox and Teddy for installing the work!

Windows

“Windows” is in my current exhibition “It’s Biological” at Suffolk University. While the digital screen is a window into a virtual world, the microscope is a window into an actual world. In “Windows,” translucent handmade paper ‘samples’ are encapsulated in clear acrylic and can be physically moved, stacked, and re-configured. Though computers have become an invaluable tool in scientific research, the physical activity of slicing and placing organic matter within glass slides under a microscope remains an essential means of scientific investigation. It is this dichotomy between the physical world and the virtual that interests me.
