Talkin' turtles with Bob Robert C Bow and the ABC program at McKinley School. 🐢 Bob talked to the students about turtles, their characteristics and turtle species. The art project was to design their own turtle shell, based on their favorite colors, interests and personalities. If the students were turtles, their "shell" would be how they would be recognized in their environment. Thanks to Bob, our volunteers, and the staff at McKinley School.

It's up & running, 70 years to the day of the Reflector front page news! From November 5, 1952 to here we are November 5, 2022. A fitting image for an historical moment in Abilene. Did you know that 9 out of 10 voters in Abilene voted for Ike? There was cause for celebration in the streets, no doubt.

💜Share acts of kindness today.💜
Our creative friends at McKinley School's after school program drew and colored joyful (and colorful!) messages, which were sent to over 130 residents in Abilene with Meals on Wheels, Senior Friendship meals, and also to the residents of Abilene Place. Thanks to our Arts Council volunteers, the staff and students at McKinley school, and the staff at Abilene Senior Center, Abilene Place, and Village Manor for their help in spreading kindness today

"Altered Hopscotch" chalk activity with the students in the ABC after school program at McKinley School. Each student drew an obstacle they imagined to be jumped on, or over. When the student started the course, they were to proclaim something good about themselves or the world.
The group participation activity emphasized cooperation, creativity and physical
activity using chalk as medium. When the game was finished, the students had time for free chalk drawing. They each started by drawing a frame.
Thanks to McKinley's staff and ACDC volunteers. Would you like to volunteer with the Arts Council? We have lots of ideas and vision; with your time and talents we can do so much more!

"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.”

The Arts Council of Dickinson County is assisting with the growing needs of the ABC Strings program for the 2022-2023 school year. On loan are 7 violins from their own Strings program. The violins will be used by students enrolled in the program while receiving instruction from Kansas State University violin students. The mission of the Arts Council is to act as a coordinating, educational, & service organization to foster, promote, encourage & increase the knowledge of the arts in Dickinson County. The violins are synonymous with their mission.
The ABC Strings program has been made possible by a donation to the Community Foundation of Dickinson County from the Jordan family, whose love for music will benefit the youth of today. Mary Kate Mary Kate Luty

Longtime veteran journalist Bernard Shaw died today. He is quoted as having said the following in an interview with Ailsa Chang on NPR: "I would urge anyone - pursue your dreams. Don't let anyone tell you what you cannot do." And that's what he did. May he rest in peace.

Today, the United States celebrates Labor Day. The very first Labor Day event took place on this date in 1882. There’s some disagreement about who came up with the idea first; according to the U.S. Department of Labor, it was a man named Maguire, but sources differ on whether it was Peter Maguire, a union leader in the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, or Matthew Maguire, a machinist.

Either way, it was the Central Labor Union in New York City that organized that first event: a parade and a picnic featuring speeches by union leaders. It was intended to celebrate labor unions and to recognize the achievements of the American worker. On that first Labor Day, 20,000 workers crowded the streets in a parade up Broadway. They carried banners that said, “Labor creates all wealth” and “Eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, eight hours for recreation!” After the parade, people held picnics all over the city. They ate Irish stew, homemade bread, and apple pie. When it got dark, fireworks went off over the skyline. The celebrations became more popular across the country in the next 10 years. In 1894, Congress made Labor Day a national holiday.
