For years, rhinos were absent from Uganda’s wild landscapes. Today, conservation efforts are helping change that story.

Beyond Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, rhinos have been reintroduced to Ajai Wildlife Reserve and are also returning to Kidepo Valley National Park after more than four decades.

These efforts represent more than the return of a species. They are part of restoring Uganda’s natural heritage and protecting its wildlife for generations to come.

We captured this beautiful moment during one of our wildlife experiences in the park—a hippo quietly feeding on dry grass as the morning unfolded around it.

It’s easy to associate hippos with water, especially when you see them spending much of the day partially submerged. But there is another side to these incredible animals.

Hippos are primarily herbivores and usually leave the water during the cooler hours of the evening and night to graze. They can travel several kilometres from the water in search of grass, feeding for several hours before returning to the water during the heat of the day.

And yes, even dry grass is part of the menu. 🌿

Their broad mouths and powerful jaws are well adapted for cropping vegetation, allowing them to consume large quantities of grass.

But this is what makes a safari special.

You don't just come to Uganda to see wildlife. You get to slow down and observe it—the way animals feed, move, interact and go about their daily lives.

Our first encounter of the morning: a group of hyenas beginning their day in the wild. 🐾

And honestly… they looked like they had somewhere important to be, but nobody was in a hurry. 😂

Have you ever wondered why hyenas seem to walk with that unusual, almost sloping posture?

There’s a good reason.

Their front legs are longer and more powerfully built than their hind legs, giving them that distinctive body shape. It is part of what makes them remarkably suited to life on the African savannah, where endurance, strength, and efficient movement matter.

And here’s another thing that often surprises people: hyenas are highly social and intelligent animals, with complex social structures and impressive communication.

So, what looks like an animal simply “walking funny” is actually a fascinating example of how wildlife is shaped by its environment.
