It is worth noting that, although there are not many attractions in Rabat (compared to the same Fes), almost all houses are included in UNESCO. And both very old and those that were built during the French protectorate. Therefore, it is clearly worth wandering around the city, just there are not many specific objects for binding here.

In the 17th century, the deportation of Moorish descendants from Spain, the Moriscos, helped solve the city's demographic problems. They quickly occupied the empty city, the economy went up, but sluggishly, and the people of Rabat wanted something more. So they merged with the neighboring city of Sale and organized the Bou Regreg Republic, essentially turning into two giant pirate ports. The economy immediately improved.

Rabat received the title of capital in 1956 and today ranks 7th in population, after Casablanca, Fes, Tangier, Marrakech, Meknes and Sale. But this does not mean that Rabat is a new-fangled city with modern neighborhoods, just that the history of Rabat was less official than that of Marrakesh and Fes, the ancient Moroccan capitals.

Rabat and Sale are satellite cities on opposite banks of the Bou Regreg River. They have existed together for more than 9 centuries, but the first and only bridge across the river that connected them was built just over 40 years ago. Rabat was founded in the XII century (1150) by the Almohads on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, near the ruins of Shelley (the ancient city of the Carthaginians), as an Arab military outpost.
