"THE LION MASK: TRADITION, TEACHING, AND PROTECTION"

An indigenous artist wears the lion mask to portray how lions prey on livestock. The mask was used to teach communities that lions are a threat to their herds, encouraging unity and strategies for protection. This cultural heritage, once part of ceremonies and traditional teachings, still lives on today. 🌿✨

In the heart of Tanzania where the sun kisses the earth and the rivers sing ancient songs, there lived a hippopotamus, often simply called a “Hippo”. Hippo is a significant and fascinating creature found in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Tanzania`s Ruvuma River Basin. Known for massive size, hippos spend most of the time in water to stay cool and hydrated. They hold culture importance in African myths, often symbolizing power, aggression and connection to nature. In the realm of arts, hippos are depicted as symbols of various emotion and idea, such as maternal love and strength.
As the party of effort to enhance arts and culture, the UNESCO-Alwaleed Philanthropies project implemented by (ADEA), has organize unique training for carvers in our community. This training imparts skills in creating high-quality products, by preserving Makonde arts of carvings which incorporating with culture. This is among the product sold in ADEA gift shop, where goals are to boost employment, economic growth in the region and promote Tanzania art globe.

MAKONDE TRAINING IN SCULPTURE - MTWARA.

Continuation of sculpture session by carvers was done by finishing the orientation and theory with all beneficiaries. Then, the next stage was the start of practical training. Every carver has learned different style of sculptures than before, and this was for them to expand more knowledge of being creative. The practical was interactive for by sharing experience among of them.
Two women has joining in the sculpture program since they inherited from their husband as by nature the Makonde women in sculpture her responsibility is finishing. So, they are trying to inspire other Makonde women to work on sculpture as part of supporting economy in the family which help to improve family life.
The training program aimed at enhancing arts and culture through vocational skills for employment. The participants, started by sketching images of their intended carvings on roughly paper though, which could not be the same as when could be sculpture later. These sketches will be differing from the final carved objects, highlighting the distinction between drawing and carving.
This initiative, funded by UNESCO-Alwaleed Philanthropies and implemented by ADEA.
