Bitter tomato? Scarlet eggplant? Yes, African eggplant! This heat-and-drought-tolerant species is distributed in Sub-Saharan Africa and South America. It prefers full sun, high temperature and sandy loam. Its leaves can be harvested in 45-60 days and 100-120 days for fruit. Orange-red fruit is eaten boiled, steamed, pickled, or in stews with other vegetables or meats. Young leaves are cut and used in soups. The leaves are extremely high in beta-carotene and calcium, also high in ascorbic acid and iron.
