"WASA has nothing to hide." This from Minister of Public Utilities Barry Padarath who was responding in Parliament to a question on discoloured water affecting customers.

The Minister explained that the temporary discolouration followed WASA's annual scheduled shutdown at the Caroni Water Treatment Plant where adjustments to the transmission system, followed by the restoration of normal pressures, disturbed sediment in parts of the network. Minister Padarath noted that WASA began flushing the affected areas immediately and has advised that the water remains safe for domestic use.

Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles has stated that the Government has failed to properly educate the public about the Special Operations Act and lacks a clear plan to tackle crime.

Her comments came as all sections of the Act took effect yesterday, allowing authorities to declare closed areas, impose curfews, establish checkpoints and restrict movement.

Beckles also criticised the Government’s handling of the recent State of Emergency, pointing to hundreds of detainees who were released without charge as evidence of an ineffective crime strategy.

Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander declined to explain how the new special operations or permit system will work.

The Municipal Corporations Amendment Bill came under sustained criticism from the opposition as debate continued in the House.

Diego Martin, North/ east MP, Colm Imbert challenged the government's approach to a series of legislative changes now before Parliament.

Imbert also turned his attention to the role of the Elections and Boundaries Commission and the significantly reduced time frame in which he said it would have to implement changes.

He also rejected Minister Khadijah Ameen's suggestion that opposition controlled municipal bodies fail to provide feedback on the proposed reforms.

Laventille West MP Kareem Marcelle has accused the Government of appointing a municipal boundaries review committee dominated by UNC political allies.

Speaking during debate on the Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill, Marcelle questioned the committee’s independence, describing it as a UNC political group aimed at influencing the next local government elections.

He singled out chairman Stara Ramlogan, Feeroz Khan, Christlyn Moore, Dr Allen Sammy, Peter Kanhai and Vijay Gosine, citing their alleged links to the UNC and state appointments.

Marcelle said the political connections undermine the committee’s credibility and contrasted it with a 1992 PNM-appointed committee, which included public servants, trade union representatives and politicians from both major parties.

The Opposition is calling for the urgent convening of Parliament’s Standing Orders Committee, accusing the Government of undermining Prime Minister’s Questions by restricting Opposition questions and supplemental queries.

The call followed Government House Leader Barry Padarath’s statement in the House yesterday that no Opposition questions had been filed for Prime Minister’s Questions.

The PNM said the Opposition refused to participate in what it described as a “parliamentary charade,” claiming more than 90 per cent of its submitted questions had been denied and that supplemental questions were being blocked.

The party said this contrasts with the period under former prime minister Dr Keith Rowley, when he attended the sessions and answered supplemental questions from the then Opposition UNC.

Public Utilities Minister Barry Padarath says WASA is working to resolve temporary discoloured water affecting parts of north, central and south Trinidad.

Padarath told Parliament yesterday that the issue followed the annual Desalcott maintenance shutdown. He said changes to the transmission system and restored water pressure disturbed sediment in the network.

WASA has since begun flushing affected areas, with the authority advising that the water remains safe for domestic use.
