Emancipation 2026.

Forged...made in fire.

Our ancestors were bound in chains smelted in fire. Forced to labour under the burning Sun. But that fire had burnt out in 1838. In the Kambule a new fire ignited, fire of freedom, fire of liberty. Today we are a people made in the Fire of Freedom. Forged from the love of liberty.
As custodians of our nation’s history and culture, we remain committed to preserving and sharing the stories that help us understand our past and inspire a more inclusive future.

We invite the public to view our Emancipation Art Exhibition “Echoes of Legacy” at the NAPA, Level 2 Foyer, Lord Kitchner Auditorium, up until August 7th 2026, Monday to Friday 10:00am to 5:00pm.

Echoes of Legacy launch

On Friday 24th July, the National Museum and Art Gallery of Trinidad and Tobago (NMAG), in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Community Development, officially opened “Echoes of Legacy”, a powerful exhibition honouring African Emancipation Day through the visual arts.

Hosted at the National Academy for the Performing Arts
(NAPA), the exhibition celebrates the resilience, creativity and enduring cultural legacy of African heritage in Trinidad and Tobago, featuring remarkable works from the National Collection, including a special tribute to the late cultural icon Paul “Bill” Trotman.

The Echoes of Legacy Exhibition opens to the public on Monday 27th July and runs until 7th August 2026.

The exhibition is a visual commemoration of the spirit of freedom, resilience and cultural heritage highlighting the enduring contributions of African influences to our Trinbagonian Performance Culture.

On July 8th the Chariman, board members, and the Ag. Curator of the National Museum and Art Gallery met with staff members of the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago and visiting representatives of the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology of the University of Cambridge to discuss potential partnerships between the organizations.
Exciting times ahead for museum collaborations in Trinidad and Tobago.

IN COMMEMORATION OF HOSAY 2026
One of the oldest traditions brought to the Caribbean through the East Indian Indentureship project, Hosay commemorates the martyrdom of Hussein and Hassan, the grandsons of the Prophet Muhammad.

Presently underway in the streets of St. James and Cedros Trinidad, this annual celebration exhibits active participation by persons of various ethnicities and backgrounds fostering a sense of unity, creativity and spirituality, collectively asserting agency amongst everyone involved.

The most prominent visual feature of this tradition are the ornate tadjahs. These represents the tomb or mausoleum of Hussain at Karbala, Iraq. It features elaborate geometric patterns, crepe rosettes, arches, domes, organic shapes, relief work and iridescent finishes dancing with the glow of the light and tassels moving to the beat of the tassa.

The National Museum and Art Gallery of Trinidad and Tobago has in its collection a prominent piece by internationally recognised painter Sybil Marjorie Atteck entitled “Indian Festival Hoosay” which the artist very skillfully captures many elements of the Hosay spectacle.

Professor Emerita Patricia Mohammed, National Museum and Art Gallery Chairman Mr. Richard Rampersad, Board Members and Curator witnessing the signing the relevant documents and approvals to photograph some of the Museum’s collection of Isaiah James Boodhoo works. The professor will be probing the artist life and works.
