As a platform committed to creative and critical practice, we believe storytelling is not only about preservation, but transformation. How do we reimagine inherited narratives in ways that allow for new ways of seeing, feeling, and belonging?

We share Innovating Within the Ancestral – The Mother of a Raakhas, a text by Kamille Andrews that revisit the story of the raakhas—a child born different—and ask: who decides what is sacred, and what is feared?

Article by Kamille Andrews

Drawing on Indo-Caribbean folklore of the raakhas, I return to a story passed down in my own family and ask:

Who is allowed to live?
Who is named monstrous?
And what happens to the mother’s grief?

Through memory, mythology, and contemporary references like Sweet Tooth, this piece sits with the possibility that our stories don’t just preserve the past — they shape what futures we allow.

❓What do we create when we build from a shared dream?

❓How do we collectively imagine when we are each mentally bound in different ways?

Co-imagining through play, difference becomes a creative force, not a limit.

This year, we’re opening space for shared exploration and immersive experiences.
Stay tuned for upcoming moments to imagine, make, and move together

🎨🥁 Drawing the Sound: Rhythm in the Age of AI and the Human Hand in Art

On World Steelpan Day – August 11th, we celebrate the visual stories that keep the heartbeat of our national instrument alive.

In honouring steelpan’s story, we recognise how artists like Hinkson preserve its spirit for future generations.

In Trinidad and Tobago, every coin carries two sides: one with the Coat of Arms—what we call “birds”—and the other with its value—“numbers.”

Birds or Numbers is a blog born from that tension. The freedom of birds vs. the finality of numbers. The infinite and the finite, coexisting.

Rooted in science and engineering, and shaped by years in manufacturing, my journey now unfolds through art. This space is where those worlds meet.

I explore how our national watchwords—discipline, production, tolerance—land differently across fields, and how that informs how I work, think, and live.

Birds or Numbers is a space for that becoming.
From measurable output to meaningful expression.
From manufacturing value to creating it.

Not a clash—but a conversation.
Not choosing one side of the coin, but learning to flip it freely.

Excerpt:

Violence seems to linger quietly in your work — suggested rather than shown, such as in the way the sari drapes over the aji’s hand, evoking an arm in a cast. How did you approach the presence of violence in this painting, especially in relation to history, gender, and power?

The violence is there. The cane is painted in gold. Our people died for gold. The New World and West Indies were founded on myths - the myths of El Dorado, the myths that sustained colonial extraction, myths of modernity and industrial development in Europe. Violence is a necessary ingredient of a myth-making project; it justifies force against the ‘other’; it denies the dignity of people, landscapes and spaces.
