Çamdibi Projesi, dünya fikrinin yok oluşunu İzmir’in Çamdibi semti özelinden ele alan ve arada kalmanın yarattığı kafa karışıklığını anlatan bir fotoğraf/araştırma/kitap projesidir.
Çamdibi, kentsel dönüşümün çok yavaş yaşandığı bir model mahalle olarak fikirlerin parçalanması, yeni distopya ve bilim kurgu bağlamında yeniden incelendiğinde; dışarıda kalmak -bir mer
kez dışı fikri, aile yapıları ve fiziksel üretim olanakları (endüstri, sanayi) gibi kavramlarla aynı genetik kodu taşıyor olabilir. Yeni liberal simülasyon şehirde yaşayan insanların yaşam pratiklerini ve algısal yapısını sürekli merkezde topluyorken, “mahalle” tam tersi bir tavırla, eski olanı, sokağı, tanımlanamaz olanı ve hatta Turgut Uyar’ın da bahsettiği “dikey ve yatay mutsuz” matematiksel bir “alan” fikrinden ziyade bir “mekan” fikrini korumaya çalışıyor olabilir. Marc Augé, Non-Places: Introduction to an Anthropology of Supermodernity adlı çalışmasında havalimanları, alışveriş merkezleri, metro istasyonları gibi alanların nasıl mekan fikrinden soyutlandığını anlatırken aynı zamanda yeni antropoloji olanaklarını da tartışmaya açıyor. Şehir merkezlerinde üzerinde yüklü anlamlar bulunan neredeyse sıkıcı kamusal alanlardan, zaman-mekan fikrinin kaybolduğu tüm mekansız mekanlara yani “non-place”’lere -ki bu tam anlamıyla bir distopyadır, karşı; mahalleler korunaklı bir ara alan, dünya fikrinin hala devam ettiği bir biçimsel yapı, neşenin ve diğer tüm insani biçimlerin önerildiği mutant bir alan olarak bir ütopyayı olanaklı kılıyor olabilir. Tüm bu olan biteni incelemenin önemli olduğunu düşünüyorum.

For the last several years I was always thinking to understand where I am coming from, what are my personal roots and how to tell it. (It was as much important as anything else.) Understanding the idea of “storytelling” for me begins with the same time I try to understand my neighbourhood. The place is called Çamdibi, on the Turkish side of beautiful coastal line of Aegean sea, İzmir. And of course understanding my grandmother. She is the most important person for this project.
“The Çamdibi Project” is basically about possibility of a critic for "new world". The idea of “the world” which stuck in “vertical and horizontal unhappiness of space and time.” as the Turkish poet Turgut Uyar said. This may be about losing the idea of “the world” itself which contains gravity, nature or like the basic human fundamentals; joy, anger, sadness. In Marc Augé’s text, Non-Places: Introduction to an Anthropology of Supermodernity, it is being discussed that places like shopping malls, airports or underground metro stations are not a “place” anymore. they must be called “non-place”. In certain kind of a view, neighbourhood may be “the place” with all of the possibilities and the anti-space for the city, the negative, the unseen. From this context, Çamdibi still have this idea and connections with “the centre”, highly likely “becoming the centre” itself. It creates some kind of confusion in people’s mind about idea of “new”, with the politics of gentrification which is the same pattern easily to be found at the rest of 2015’s Turkey. For me Çamdibi is standing there like an observable model slowly changes each day like a living science fiction story either will turn into a dystopia or an utopia.
