Film at Lincoln Center

During India’s first COVID lockdown, millions of migrant workers were stranded when public transportation came to a halt, jobs disappeared, and the simple idea of “going home” became an almost impossible mission. For Mahesh Jena, a 22-year-old construction worker, the only way out was an old bicycle. He rode across the country from Maharashtra back to his home in Odisha, covering roughly 1,700–2,000 kilometers in just seven days.
His story became national news. Politicians came to meet him, promises of jobs and housing followed, and people spoke of him as a hero. But once the headlines faded, Mahesh’s life largely returned to where it had been before. This is where CycleMahesh becomes truly interesting: the film is not simply concerned with how far he managed to cycle, but with what remains of a person’s life once the world has stopped looking at him - after he has briefly been transformed into a “story.”
Rather than making a straightforward social documentary, Suhel Banerjee dismantles Mahesh’s true story and reconstructs it through documentary, fiction, reenactment, myth, music, mobile-phone footage, and even the constant exposure of the film crew and the filmmaking process itself. In some scenes, Mahesh plays himself; in others, another actor takes his place. At times, the director himself appears, deliberately breaking the illusion the film has just created. CycleMahesh does not play with the boundary between “real” and “fake” merely to display formal cleverness. It poses a more uncomfortable question: when filmmakers turn the lives of the poor, the marginalized, or migrant workers into cinema, who ultimately benefits from the telling? And when the crew packs up and goes home, has anything actually changed for the person who was filmed?
What makes CycleMahesh far more entertaining than the phrase “a documentary about migrant workers” might suggest is its abundance of humor, strangeness, theatricality, and moments that seem to drift into fable or dream. Mahesh’s journey through fields, forests, mountains, rivers, fire, and the roads of India is captured with remarkable beauty. Yet the film is always ready to interrupt that beauty, reminding us that behind these images are hunger, precarity, and the severely limited choices available to Mahesh.
Film at Lincoln Center described the film’s mere 61 minutes as being so densely packed with ideas and formal experimentation that it feels much larger than its running time. Critics at Outlook India, meanwhile, have noted the film’s refusal to turn Mahesh’s “resilience” into an easy heroic narrative: the fact that someone has had to become this resilient may not be something to celebrate at all, but rather evidence of a world that never offered him enough choices in the first place.
CycleMahesh can therefore be watched in several ways at once: as an eccentric road movie, as a portrait of India’s migrant-worker crisis, or as a film quietly questioning itself from beginning to end - asking, “How much right does cinema have to transform someone else’s life into a story?” CycleMahesh won Best First Feature at IDFA 2024 before travelling to New Directors/New Films at MoMA and Film at Lincoln Center, Yamagata, and numerous other festivals.
Most recently, it received the Jury Prize in the Asian Vision Competition at TIDF 2026, where the jury praised the film’s freedom in moving between documentary, fiction, and myth, continually destabilizing the boundary between “reality” and its representation. If you want to see how contemporary documentary cinema can be serious, playful, beautiful, and self-critical all at once, CycleMahesh is not to be missed.
