Customers pay up to USD 20,000 for JEDCO power installation
Customers seeking connection to city electricity through Ezra/JEDCO may pay between USD 4,000 and USD 20,000 or more for poles, transformers, cables, installation and labor, Transport Undersecretary Paul Dhel Gum has said.
Gum questioned the arrangement in a statement, saying customers finance the infrastructure before continuing to pay regular electricity consumption bills. He said the equipment then effectively becomes the property of the power company, leaving customers without ownership or compensation.
“After spending your own money to purchase and install all this equipment, your property is connected and you continue paying the normal electricity consumption bills,” Gum wrote. “Yet, strangely, the equipment you paid for effectively becomes the property of the power company.”
Gum said customers therefore finance infrastructure, pay for connection and electricity, but lose ownership of the equipment. He said the situation raises “serious questions of fairness, ownership and consumer protection.”
“There must be a clearer and more reasonable policy governing who pays for electricity infrastructure and who ultimately owns it,” Gum said.
