Uncle Bona Malwal Madut Ring: A giant has fallen

By Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth

November 3, 2025.

Today, November 3rd, 2025, I woke up to the devastating news that our beloved uncle, Bona Malwal, has departed this world and returned to Heaven on November 2, 2025. The people of South Sudan are shocked and deeply saddened by his passing.

We are mourning. We are crying. We are hurting, because a true son of South Sudan, a pioneer, and a liberation icon is no longer with us physically. Yet we also know this: Uncle Bona Malwal lived his life in complete devotion to the freedom, dignity, and independence of the Republic of South Sudan. His journey on earth was not in vain. He fulfilled his mission.

I wish to briefly reflect on my personal interactions with him, especially during my time as Head of Mission to USA and UN in Washington, D.C. and New York .

Uncle Bona would frequently travel to Washington, D.C., and every time he came, he made it a point to visit the South Sudanese community living there. Among them were his own two children, namely, Ambassador Akuei Bona Malwal, the current Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Nyanut Bona Malwal, who were residing with us in Washington.

Whenever Uncle Bona was in the United States, he was always invited to major policy and research institutions such as the Brookings Institution, the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), and the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), among others. In each of these platforms, Uncle Bona spoke boldly, consistently, and unapologetically in favour of the independence and freedom of the people of South Sudan long before independence was even achieved.

He sacrificed his entire life to the struggle for liberation. He stood firm through the hardest years. He never retreated. He never compromised his belief that South Sudan must be free.

Today, we honour him for that.

Rest in eternal peace, Uncle Bona Malwal.
Your race is finished.
Your task is complete.
Your legacy lives on.

We thank you.

Amen.

Twic Mayardit in Archive revisited💪💪💪❤❤❤.

Chief Benjamin Lang Juuk (1900_1983).

In the picture is Benjamin Lang Juuk , the Paramount chief of Akuar section of a Jieng Twic Mayardit (Twic Bol chol) found in former Gogrial district of Bahr el ghazal region which is now Twic County , Warrap State. Chief Benjamin Lang Juuk was a Paramount chief of Akuar section of Jieng Twic Mayardit of Bahr el Ghazal and veteran politician.

Chief Lang Juuk was born in Akuar area in the year believed to be around 1900 or 1915 . He belongs to pajung clan who are pahol Yuom 🦴 sub clan[thigh bone reverence clan], he was a son of Akuar Chief . He was one of the first Jieng boys to attend school in Gogrial and perhaps, Bahr el ghazal region . He was baptized and become Christian when he joined school and was given a Christian name , Benjamin.

He joined Veronica Father's mission school at Kuacjok and then qualified to Sir Lee Stack Memorial intermediate school in Wau , after he completed intermediate school at Sir Lee Stack School (Wau) , he became a teacher in 1933 till he abandoned Teaching job in 1936 where he became Clerk in Gogrial Rural council for Chief Kuanyin Agoth in Gogrial.

Chieftaincy.

After he became Clerk in Gogrial rural council , no doubts that Bany Benjamin Lang Juuk got close to the Administration of Jieng Affairs and at the same time he was a son of prominent Jieng chief of Akuar section of Twic Bol Chol.
Chief Benjamin Lang Juuk ascended to the position of Paramount Chief of Akuar section of Jieng Twic Mayardit (Twic Bol Chol) in the year 1941 succeeding his father.

Chief Benjamin Lang Juuk was the only highly educated Jieng Paramount Chief in the entire Jieng lands (Bahr el ghazal and upper Nile regions) with another educated Jieng Twic Mayardit Chief of Adiang section , Paulino C***r Rhyan they assisted Chief Bol Chol Bol the Paramount chief of Twic Mayardit (Twic Bol Chol) in Management of entire Twic affairs.

During the chieftaincy of Benjamin Lang , Akuar section had established a rule of law and fruitful relationship with other sections of Twic and Neighboring Nuer Bul tribe of Mayom in western Nuer land. Because he was the only highly eduated Jieng Chief , bany lang Juuk encouraged education in entire Twic and across Gogrial district making him the first Jieng chief to support education in his area because education was not welcomed by most of Jieng chiefs by then.

Sudan Parliament.

When British colonial administration in the Sudan conducted Juba conference in 1947 to determine the status of southern Sudan , Chief Lang Juuk together with other southern Sudanese chiefs like Giir Thiik of Apuk , Chief Arol Kacuol of Gok , Chief Mawein Ariik of lou , Chief Bilkuei of panaruu , Chief Riiny Lual of Ayat section of Palieupiny of Malual Dinka , Chief Kuac Kuac (Kuac Mayiel)of cimel chiefdom of Palieupiny section of Malual Dinka and other educated southerners attended Juba conference in 1947. No doubts that Legend Benjamin Lang Juuk showed his love and nationalism for Southern Sudan where he challenged and rejected unity with Sudan Arabs.

Chief Benjamin Lang Juuk joined Sudan politics when he was elected as a sentor in the house of Representatives for Jur river north constituency in the year 1953.
When Ibrahim Abboud took over the presidency of Sudan through Military coup in 1958 , Chief Lang Juuk was re-elected to Sudan parliament for Gogrial South.

Legend Benjamin Lang Juuk served as Paramount chief Of Akuar section of Jieng Twic Bol Chol (Twic Mayardit) and politician till he died in 1982.

May the soul of Legend Benjamin Lang Juuk rest in peace with his Ancestors .

Salva Kiir reminds people he is from Marial Baai, Aweil West.

The President of South Sudan H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit during the Bhar El Ghazal tour in Aweil reminded people that he is actually from Aweil and his family just moved from Aweil to Awan, Gogrial.

"In Awan Chan, sometimes people will say where is this Malual (Buoth Anyar) coming from with the chaos" 😆 Kiir jokingly said in Thongjieng about being teased in Awan becuz he is from Aweil.

He comes from Payum Clan in Ayat Riiny Lual section of Aweil West county. Some of his cousins still reside in Marial Baai today.

His family's household in Marial Baai can still be located today though vacant now. The Jieng never lose historical records of land ownership hence a land that belongs to you remains yours forever even though another person inhabits it he does so knowing he is not the owner.

Salva Kiir's grandmother Anok Lual is from Paciermeth and his maternal grandmother is from Paken wunlang, Aweil North.

So clearly he's undoubtedly from Mading Aweil has he narrated.

Anyar Yol Mathiang has single handedly revolutionise Jieng Music.

Back then everyone used to say singing in your own language makes you local.
Now everyone wants to sing in his own language.

Then comes Morocco Boy and Small Engine and took what Anyar Yol started through the roof.

Jieng Music is now the mainstream music not just amongst Jieng but amongst various South Sudanese people.

We as Pan Afrikanist encourage every singer to promote his or her language.

South Sudanese languages are beautiful languages there's no dignity in denying one's identity.

Be as proud as you can. You can't change wit you are. English is a foriegn language and we should not hold it to any high esteem more than our own languages.

JIENG MADING AWEIL

Mading Aweil is inhabited by two Tribes namely; Jieng and Luo and so to say Jieng Mading Aweil imply there's another tribe in Aweil.

The Jieng Mading Aweil are popularly known by various names which are
Malual Buoth Anyar
Malual Akot Tong
Malual Giernyang
Or just Malual Dinka.

Jieng Malual is part of Jieng Rek found in Aweil and Warrap State.
It is the largest Jieng section numbering approximately 2 million making them larger than the whole Jieng Upper Nile combined and rivaling the Nuer tribe in population as well as surpassing Shilluk and Azande tribe by big margin in fact if it were its a separate tribe Jieng Malual would fall third as the largest tribe in South Sudan after Nuer.

Jieng Mading Aweil inhabit the area bordering Western Bhar El Ghazal in SouthWest , Warrap state to the East and Abyei to the NorthEast.

Jieng Mading Aweil originally had two Major sections before further divisions was made. They were;
1. Palieupiny Malual
2. Pajook Malual

Palieupiny was the entire geographical location of Aweil West and Aweil South from Ayat Riiny Lual chiefdom to Buoncuai Geng Ariath, which in essence is the area south-south west of the Lol River.

Palieupiny itself has two sections

a. Palieupiny which is the 5 cheifdoms of Aweil West
b. Paliet Wek Anyet which is the 3 cheifoms of Aweil South.
With time Palieupiny became associated with Aweil West and Aweil South popularise the name Paliet into mainstream societal categories of Jieng Malual thus creating two distinct sections of Palieupiny Malual.

2. Pajook Malual
The second section of Jieng Malual is Pajook and it's divided into two, which are ;

a. Malual Tueng which basically is the whole area covering the North side of Lol River comprising of all 5 Aweil North chiefdoms including part of Ayat Riiny Lual.

b. (I) Abiem Malual
Abiem is the current geographical area of Aweil East comprising of 10 cheifdoms which is NorthEast of the Lol River making it part of Pajook rather than Palieupiny since the division is based on which side of the Lol River one falls on.

b (II). Awan Pajook
Awan Pajook of Gogrial West is part of Abiem Pajook however it was transferred to Gogrial West in 1947 but they maintained the name Pajook to this date hence excluding it would be an incomplete historical account of Pajook Malual.

Jieng Malual is an extension of Rek section of Jieng. They are purely 100% Rek however due to their numerous population doubling that of Rek in Warrap State and the evolution of the dialect they are seen as a separate section of Jieng which couldn't be farther from the truth.
Most of Jieng Malual trace their lineages to Gogrial and Tonj.
The question of dialect often raised by people disputing Malual being Rek is meaningless and irrelevant. Awan Chan and Kuach speak closer to Malual more than to Tonj does that make them non-Rek? Dialects evolve and so its irrelevant and erroneous to use this argument to dispute the historical fundamental fact. It is completely baseless unsubstantiated argument that lacks critical analysis of the history of Rek and Malual.

The next time we will list all 23 cheifdoms of Jieng Malual. This article is merely focused on two major sections and their subsections.
