The Adoption of the Saxophone in Diola Music

The Diola people, who mainly live in the Casamance region of southern Senegal, have a rich musical tradition based on singing, percussion, and traditional instruments. Over time, cultural exchanges and the evolution of musical practices led to the introduction of modern instruments, including the saxophone.

The saxophone gradually found its place in Diola music through modern orchestras and local bands seeking to enrich their sound. Its expressive tone and ability to produce melodies similar to the human voice allowed it to blend naturally with traditional Diola rhythms. Musicians use it both to accompany vocal performances and to play solos inspired by ancestral melodies.

The adoption of the saxophone does not represent a rejection of tradition; rather, it reflects a creative adaptation. The instrument has become a way for Diola musicians to express their cultural identity while embracing contemporary influences. Today, in some musical groups from Casamance, the saxophone helps create a bridge between cultural heritage and modernity, allowing Diola music to evolve while preserving its authenticity.

22 Mai 22 Mai 1944
Décès à l’âge de 24 ans à Tombouctou au Soudan français (actuelle République du Mali) de l’héroïne casamançaise Aline Sitoé DIATTA.
Elle y avait été déportée par l’administration française après son arrestation à Cabrousse le 8 mai 1943.
Paix à son âme .
À une époque où son peuple vivait sous la domination coloniale, elle s’est levée avec courage pour défendre la dignité, la liberté et les terres de son peuple.
Par ses paroles, sa foi et sa détermination, elle a inspiré toute une génération à résister face à l’injustice.
