Anthropologist and Harlem Renaissance writer Zora Neale Hurston did not always believe in Voodoo, but after visiting Haiti, she made clear connections to the ecstatic worship of Haitian Vodou ceremonies and those of Pentecostal worship services. In 1938 ZNH gave advanced copies of her book Tell My Horse, on the subject, and discussed some of her findings with the AFRO Newspaper in Baltimore, after a long motor trip from her home in Florida.

The AFRO refers to the book as “Ask My Horse” throughout the article which makes me wonder if this was the original name of the book, or was this a simple mistake?! What do you think?

HHM began in October of 2019, and it is miraculous how BIG it has gotten since that time. HHM was coined by Mina Wilson and many-a- people and was the result of an in person gathering in August of 2019 as well as many Hoodoo centric comments and posts all under the guidance of Mama Rue and stamped in the Walking the Dikenga Collective FB Group. The Holy Days of HHM Month were created by members of this same group and became so.

These are just a FEW names (not all, not everyone, not the most important, just what I remember, what I found, whose @’s I know on IG! Please tag the folks I did not add!

Bless The Roads roads offered us a day to honor our fore parents. Day of Mothers and Fathers was at his movement. Plus a very active leadership role in WtD

Lissah Mason | The Creatress offered us the day of healing and now yearly HHM celebrations in chicago

Daizy October🫀🕯🖤 was present, sharing in the Walking the Dikenga group and does a yearly calendar that archived many of these dates

Toya R. Smith was REGULARLY suggesting, voting, conjuring, and praying. She be in the background, but she has always been here in the front and solidified many of the holy days listed (cc all saints day)

Jonas shared in WtF regularly, and gave ample guidance, clarity, and information while co-organzing All Saints Day Celebration of the Dead alongside Toya R. Smith the following year in Baltimore.

Thank you to Dani Bee from The Hoodoo Plant Mamas Podcast for writing an article in 2023 on HHM

Thank you to I Go By EbonyJanice for allowing us to center citation as an ETHIC. Her post is what made me want to attach names and place to Hoodoo Heritage Month in this way, this year. I am operating like this because I want people to cite my work, podcast, and other offerings as well. I am mirroring what I would like to see!

HAPPY HHM!

Happy Hoodoo Heritage Month! Thank you to Mama Rue and thank you to those of us who were apart of and supported the Walking The Dikenga Collective whose work uplifted the importance of this longstanding beautiful tradition. I dont know what wave of Hoodoo we are in now… (4th?) but it’s real INTERESTING. So heres my offering of the hoodoo scholarship and practice that raised me as a young (public) facing hoodoo 9 years ago. These understandings, and plenty more, have sharpened, expanded, and enlarged my work not only as a practitioner but my Hoodoo Politic. Hoodoo takes many forms, and I have always been a Political Hoodoo, because of some of these folks above as well as many peers who have worked alongside me in presence and in spirit. Those who carry the mantel of the robust ethnographic project of Hoodoo + and acknowledge the traumatic legacy of the transatlantic slave trade and subsequent horrors our people still face as its result. Hoodoo is slave religion, and that makes it worth protecting and honoring because it is the reality and it is the truth, and we are not free. Yet we still live, just like Mother Hoodoo, and we will continue. Happy Hoodoo Heritage Month.

This made me cry this morning. I kept repeating as my tears flowed that it feels so good to be seen and that my work is doing what was intended. That’s it. It can be so easy in a social media driven, content content content, celebrity influencer centric time to feel like, you didn’t “win” if you’re not making X amount of money, constantly at the things, posting 5 x a day, in the midst of a total flop era! On the other hand when you don’t have a PhD as a grad school drop out in the academic world… who are you even? Dystopian times where all of this is real and this can’t be real. To dream of a project and hope it comes to fruition with grassroots support (which works!), keeping my head down to work, trying to be proficient, studied, and intentional while remaining gracious and kind. To be JUDGED by people in the community from the very beginning, (the elitism is nuts) who don’t think I deserve what I have because I’m not just a spiritualist I’m a regular bad B* from Baltimore who attempted to figure it out and take up a little space. Keyword: TAKE. Because I dared to grab a mic (pre podcast wars), write a book, and pray, and teach about topics like Africana Religions and Hoodoo and the craft that still get people banished, disregarded and worse. I dared to talk about what I was learning and grew an organic following while never purporting myself as an all knowing leader or teacher. I just have been publicly figuring out, asking questions, and doing the deep work that my ancestors told me for 9 years. To be judged and accused of things from people you never heard of, chile (some of yall were there, the lore runs deep lol) IT IS SO NICE TO BE SEEN! It is so nice that people are not afraid to love me out loud. I am so appreciative of you Christina Brown and Shadonis and everyone who shared their love words and reposts. Just thank you.

And I absolutely should be popping my s*t more!!!!! And my work is still meaningful and it feels good to be reminded of that even when I’m not “producing”

This docuseries will not come to life without your support. This project is more than an idea or even a passion project. It is years and years worth of questioning, uncovering, losing faith, and returning. It is the multiple religions I’ve practiced and studied since I was baptized Catholic as a baby, and then became Baptist and then and then…I am so excited to uncover our religious differences, their tensions, and their sameness. What has this ever presence been trying to communicate with me? and what are all of these ancient (and sometimes new) Gods speaking through the many faces of humanity at THIS particular time? learn more @ the l.i.b. and if it moves you, give at least seven 💸💸💸
