June 16 is a day I always eagerly anticipated as a child growing up. My grandmother would make delicious food for me and give me money to pay to watch the popular movie "SARAFINA" at school. Truth be told, we mostly went there to enjoy the action without absorbing much of the lessons. Some teachers seemed more interested in the money than in the educational value of the movie.

"SARAFINA” evokes strong nostalgic memories and deserves to be treated with utmost solemnity. The lessons it imparts should be deeply inculcated in the minds of the younger generation. Now, having re-watched the movie as an adult, I realize the profound messages it conveys. Here are the key lessons I learned, which I wish to share with you all;

Firstly, Courage and Resistance: The film highlights the bravery required to stand up against oppressive systems. Sarafina and her peers show that even young people can be powerful agents of change. Their courage in confronting the brutal apartheid regime is inspiring and teaches us that no matter our age or circumstances, we have the power to challenge and resist injustice.

In addition, the Power of Education: Through the character of Mary Masombuka, the film underscores the role of education in empowering individuals and fostering critical thinking, which is crucial for challenging injustice. Mary’s dedication to her students goes beyond academic lessons; she instils in them the importance of understanding their history and the power of their voices.

Also, Unity and Solidarity: The students' collective action demonstrates the strength found in unity. Their shared goal of ending apartheid brought them together, showing how solidarity can amplify the impact of their efforts. This lesson is particularly relevant in today’s world, where collective action is often necessary to address systemic issues.

In addendum, the Cost of Freedom: The movie portrays the significant sacrifices and personal losses that often accompany the struggle for freedom and justice, reminding viewers of the high price paid by those who fought for their rights. The characters face imprisonment, violence, and even death, highlighting the reality that the path to freedom is fraught with challenges and sacrifices.

Moving forward, Resilience and Hope: Despite the harsh realities of apartheid, the characters maintained hope and resilience. This emphasizes the importance of maintaining hope and determination even in the face of severe adversity. Their resilience is a testament to the human spirit's capacity to endure and persevere, encouraging us to remain hopeful and steadfast in our struggles.

Conclusively, Cultural Identity and Pride: "SARAFINA” celebrates African culture through its music, dance, and storytelling, reinforcing the idea that cultural pride can be a source of strength and inspiration in the fight against oppression. Yesterday (14 February,2024) we decide to spend our valentine by donating school materials to children around Kissy community.

In the journey of education, every pencil, every notebook, every textbook holds the promise of knowledge yet to be discovered, dreams yet to be realized, and futures yet to be shaped. For many pupils, access to school materials transcends the tangible; it becomes a beacon of hope, a pathway to possibilities yet unseen.

In the hands of a child, a simple pencil transforms into a mighty instrument of creativity, a conduit for thoughts, ideas, and aspirations to take flight. A new notebook is not just blank pages waiting to be filled; it is a canvas upon which the strokes of learning, growth, and self-expression are painted.

In a quaint corner known as First Street, Hassan and Hassanatu epitomized true love. Their bond blossomed from childhood and endured through divergent career paths—Hassan as a lawyer and Hassanatu as a banker. Through the trials of their studies, they struggled together, only to secure jobs in the same month after graduation.

During their second week of work, Hassanatu posed a challenge to Hassan: could he go a day without calling or texting her? If he could, she promised to love him even more. Hassan, eager to please his beloved, confidently accepted the challenge. However, unbeknownst to him, Hassanatu had been diagnosed with cancer and had only one day left to live.

The following day, Hassan approached Hassanatu’s home with elation, calling out, “My baby, my baby, come and reward me for my feat by loving me more.” His joy turned to anguish as he entered her room to find her lying on a mat, her head covered by a note that read, “My love, I know you’ll feel my absence, but as you did for one day, continue until we meet again.”
