The Legend of Somdet Chao Ko Yo — The Enlightened Monk of Khao Kuti 🪷⛰️

🌊 Tracing the Legend of the Songkhla Lake Basin — "Somdet Chao Ko Yo," the Revered Monk of Kho Kuti Mountain

In the era of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, the lands surrounding Songkhla Lake were a landscape of ancient forests, hills, and thriving Buddhist communities 🌿🏞️. It was here that the name of a deeply venerated monk became etched into local memory — Somdet Chao Ko Yo, also known as Phra Ratchamuni Kho Kuti 🪷.

👶 Origins and Early Life

According to legend, he was born in Ban Phru Subdistrict, Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province, the second son of a couple named Khammi and Kaew. His birth name was "Khao" (meaning "white") ⚪, and at birth, a remarkable sign appeared — the center of his palms bore markings resembling a white lotus flower 🌸🤲, considered an auspicious omen of one destined for great spiritual merit ✨.

🧘 The Path of Renunciation

At the age of 20, his grandfather entrusted him to Adhikarn Am of Wat Ton Pap 🛕 in Ban Phru, where he studied the Buddhist Dhamma and Vinaya (monastic code) 📜. After his ordination, he resided at Wat Ton Pap for seven Rains Retreats (Vassa) 🌧️🪔, deepening his knowledge before departing on a dhutanga (ascetic pilgrimage) 🚶‍♂️ in search of deeper spiritual truth.

He journeyed to Wat Suwan Khiri in Singhanakhon District — one of Songkhla's most ancient temples 🛕 — spending six Vassa there, before continuing to Wat Bang Hnot in Khu Tao Subdistrict, and onwards to the town of Sating Phra 🌄.

🌟 A Meeting of Great Masters

It was in Sating Phra that Somdet Chao Ko Yo encountered the legendary Somdet Chao Phako — better known as Luang Pu Thuat 🪷🌊, "the monk who turned seawater fresh" — one of the most celebrated Buddhist masters of southern Thailand.

During their spiritual discourse, Somdet Chao Ko Yo made a solemn vow: if the two monks had shared accumulated merit in past lives, let Somdet Chao Phako be seen seated upon a red carpet ❤️🪷. At that very moment, the vision manifested exactly as vowed — astonishing all who witnessed it 😲🙏.

The two then continued their pilgrimage together, eventually meeting Somdet Chao Ko Yai of Wat Sung Ko Yai 🛕, and Somdet Chao Tha Phao (also known as Somdet Chao Phrom Thong) of Wat Tha Samphao Nuea in Phatthalung Province 🚤.

Similar sacred vows were made and fulfilled with each of these masters, leading local people to believe that all four monks had shared deep karmic bonds since ancient times 🔗✨.

🏝️ The Sacred Mountain of Ko Yo Island

After parting ways, Somdet Chao Ko Yo travelled to Ko Yo Island in Songkhla Lake 🌊🏝️, pitching his meditation tent at Ban Laem Pho for seven months 🧘‍♂️🌙 before briefly returning to visit his parents in Ban Phru.

During that stay at Wat Ton Pap 🛕, he is said to have left a sacred footprint within the temple grounds 👣✨ — which is why the temple is known as "Wat Phra Bat Ban Phru" (the Temple of the Holy Footprint) to this day.

He later returned to Ko Yo Island and ascended a hill, thereafter named "Khao Kuti" ⛰️ — meaning "the hill where the monk's kuti (dwelling) stood."

One night, during deep meditation 🧘‍♂️🌌, he received a vision of the Lord Buddha descending from the heavens to the summit 🌤️🪷, with a divine message declaring the site sacred and instructing him to enshrine a Buddha image upon the peak.

Somdet Chao Ko Yo fulfilled this vision, constructing a revered Buddha image at the summit 🪷🙏.

In recognition of his extraordinary virtue, King Ekathotsarot of Ayutthaya 👑 later bestowed upon him the royal monastic title "Phra Ratchamuni Khao Kuti."

📜 A Legacy Across Centuries

Though centuries have passed, the story of Somdet Chao Ko Yo continues to be passed down among the communities of the Songkhla Lake Basin 🌊📖.

He is remembered as a monk of great spiritual power 🧘‍♂️✨ who bridged the sacred traditions of Songkhla, Phatthalung, and Sating Phra 🛕, and his legend remains one of the most treasured spiritual heritage stories of southern Thailand to this day 🇹🇭🪷.

🙏 This legend is part of the rich Buddhist heritage of the Songkhla Lake region in southern Thailand — a spiritual landscape that continues to draw pilgrims and visitors from across Southeast Asia.

When most people think of Bodhidharma, they imagine the fierce monk with piercing eyes, thick eyebrows, and a heavy beard — the wandering sage who crossed mountains and seas to transmit the teachings of Zen.

For centuries, this image has become deeply rooted in Buddhist art across China and Japan. Paintings, statues, temple scrolls, and Daruma dolls all portray Bodhidharma as rugged, intimidating, and almost supernatural in appearance.

Yet in some temples and modern interpretations, Bodhidharma appears without a beard.

To some, this may seem unusual.
To others, it reveals something deeper.

─────────────────
✦ Beyond Historical Appearance
─────────────────

Historically, Bodhidharma is believed to have originated from India, and traditional Chinese depictions emphasised his foreign appearance:

🔅 Deep-set eyes
🔅 Thick facial hair
🔅 Strong features
🔅 Dark complexion

These visual elements symbolised a monk from distant lands carrying profound teachings into China.

But Buddhist art was never meant to function as portrait photography.
Its purpose was always spiritual expression.

Different eras and schools portrayed enlightened beings according to the qualities they wished to emphasise.

A fierce Bodhidharma symbolises:
🔅 Discipline
🔅 Perseverance
🔅 Spiritual power
🔅 The destruction of illusion

A softer, beardless Bodhidharma may instead represent:
🔅 Silence
🔅 Emptiness
🔅 Compassion
🔅 Inner stillness

─────────────────
✦ The Zen Understanding of Form
─────────────────

"Do not cling to form."

This is perhaps the most fitting lens through which to understand the beardless Bodhidharma.

Zen teaches that the true nature of any being — teacher, master, or patriarch — cannot be captured in physical appearance. The beard belongs to the body. The body is a vessel. What Bodhidharma truly represents lies beyond what any sculpture or painting can hold.

There is even a famous Zen koan on this very question:

💭 "Why has the Western Barbarian no beard?"

Asked by the master Wakuan, this riddle was not meant to be answered logically. It was meant to shatter the habit of clinging to appearances — to point disciples toward the formless nature of the teacher they revered.

The earliest depictions of Bodhidharma, dating to the 11th and 12th centuries, actually show him without the iconic beard — portrayed instead as a slender monk with gentle Chinese features. The fierce, bearded archetype came centuries later.

So perhaps the beardless Bodhidharma is not a modern revision.
Perhaps it is a return.

─────────────────
✦ A Teaching in Itself
─────────────────

The next time you encounter a beardless image of Bodhidharma, consider this:

The form has changed.
The transmission has not.

The Dharma was never in the beard.
