Book update!
For all those patient supporters, you'll be pleased to know that my book project is back on track. Sincerest apologies for the delay - it's been a challenging past three years since I returned to Brisbane.
Please look out for more detailed updates via email.
In the meantime, enjoy some waterlillies! I've only found these tiles in one spot in Lao Sua Cemetery.

Attending the exhumation of my great-grandfather and his brother was not exactly on my mind when my uncle asked me and my dad to help him with some 'family matters' in November 2012.

I'd only moved to Singapore a few months early before finding out that I had relatives resting at Bukit Brown Cemetery, Singapore.

But it was a precious experience that kick-started my family tree research, and broader interest in the cemetery. Volunteers there patiently helped me find other relatives, and numerous places around Singapore connected to my family. I'll be forever grateful to Bukit Brown for showing me where I come from.

It's been a while...thanks for your kind messages. I'm feeling much better recently after my own unexpected breast surgery. As an introvert, I've got a tenancy to go into a cocoon when life gets a bit tough. Appreciate your patience, especially amid this covid thing! More updates to come soon. Here's a toothy smile from me as a one-year old with my dad, whose ancestors inspired this project! 🌺

It's discoveries like this that make this project so exiting! A truly 'special' tile uncovered by a special volunteer at Bukit Brown Cemetery in Singapore. After spending a year trekking around the cemetery together, he really knows how to spot rare antique tiles. Is Bukit Brown Cemetery is Singapore's best open-air museum? Look at these 100 year plus patterned wall tiles! Likely to be made in Europe judging from the design and colours. These tiles are likely to be European and at least a century old. They decorate the front of an altar table. Looks to be in the Art Nouveau style?

Flower Fever! When one bit of research leads to another...you start to see bouquets of flowers everywhere! This tomb dates back to the mid 1930's, but when were the tiles made? And where? Certainly this design has all the hallmarks of the Art Nouveau period with its sinuous and refined representation of nature. Any ideas about what kind purple flower is being shown?

Hello...how is everyone? I'm sorry to have been out of the picture lately, but happy that my mum's cancer treatment has been successful.
The last few months have been a marathon for me, and many others, I'm sure. Between avoiding covid, looking after my two young kids, and two house moves, I've been out of energy!
However, I'm looking forward to getting back in touch with you, and continue sharing more stories of Singapore's vintage tiles.
I hope you are also hanging in there, and taking care of yourself. :)

Friends of Japan! Let me know your thoughts...I'm thinking that this 'seascape' is of a famous place in Japan. I don't think it's Miyajima near Hiroshima's inland sea though because it's missing the big red Tori gate plonked nearby in the sea. Any other spots that you can think of? Dreaming of travelling to Japan the closest I'm getting at the moment! :)
