The “Oxford’ chair, designed by Arne Jacobsen and manufactured by Fritz Hansen.
The chair was designed for St. Catherine’s College at the University of Oxford in the early 1960s. In fact Jacobsen was commissioned to design the entire college — from the buildings to the furniture — with the chair meant only for the professors. The chair’s elegant back was intentionally tall so as to project quiet authority and presence and as with all Jacobsen’s designs it remains comfortable over long academic discussions.
This particular chair is upholstered in its original grey wool and bears the maker’s mark showing it to be an authentic 1970 production. Half a century later, with its sculptural clean lines and commanding presence, the “Oxford” chair still feels modern and relevant.

Sofa designed by Kaare Klint in 1930 and executed by Red Rasmussen Snedkerier with a solid mahogany frame and pink wool upholstery. The sofa is recognised for its base of 8 rectangular shaped legs which are connected on the diagonal with cross connections. This feature moves beyond a design feature to bring more stability. The high back and armrests give the piece its grand and elegant silhouette without compromising on comfort. This iconic sofa embodies the essence of Danish design as envisioned by Klint.
Kaare Klint (1888-1954) is regarded as the father of Danish Mid-century design. In 1924, he helped establish the Department of Furniture Design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. His core principle was to research functionality and have a sense for proportion, space and the human body whilst having a deep knowledge and appreciation for craftsmanship. His design ethos influenced the most well known Danish designers including Finn Juhl, Hans Wegner, Poul Kjaerholm and Borge Mogensen.

Easy chair “JH-719” designed by Hans Wegner and made by master cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen. The chair has its original red lacquered beech frame with the seat and back in flag halyard fitted with brass cylinders. The loose cushions are upholstered in cream fabric. This red version of the JH-719 was only made in very few numbers as a special edition, shown at the Copenhagen Cabinetmaker’s Guild Exhibition 1968.
Halyard refers to a line that hoists or covers a sail. The flag halyard is made of natural linen woven around a core that is strong enough to avoid stretching over time. Even a skilled worker takes over 14 hours to do the weaving. Wegner’s motivation in using these contrasting materials was to demonstrate and give rein to ability to design practical and comfortable furniture in any material. This chair shows off the strengths of the celebrated collaborative Wegner/Hansen partnership with Hansen executing to perfection Wegner’s complex designs.

The “Mama Bear” chair by Hans Wegner, manufactured by AP Stolen. This distinctive high backed easy chair has its armrests and legs in oak and retains the original red upholstery.

Hans Wegner, often hailed as the “Master of the Chair,” is a Danish design legend whose work helped shape the global perception of Scandinavian furniture. With over 500 chair designs to his name, Wegner was renowned for his ability to blend form, function, and comfort into timeless works of art. His designs exemplify simplicity, elegance, and meticulous craftsmanship, making them enduring symbols of modern design. The “Mama Bear’ Chair was Wegner’s response to the often heavy chairs of the time. The chairs’s inviting curves offer the same warm bear like embrace that the “Papa bear” chair does albeit on a smaller scale.

A pair of rare chairs with black lacquered tubular steel frame., a “floating” seat and back with woven cane. Designed by Grete Jalk and made in 1952 for Laurids Lønborg. The maker’s paper label remains.
The chairs were exhibited at Kunsthaandværkets spring exhibition in 1952 and produced in very limited numbers.
Grete Jalk (1920-2006) was a furniture designer at a time when it was largely an exclusively male profession. She was born in Copenhagen and graduated in 1946 at the Royal Danish School of Fine Arts with a degree in furniture design under guidance of Kaare Klint. Jalk’s design approach was to follow rational design principles combining them with traditional craft skills. Her work was highly praised and she was widely respected for her furniture’s distinctive feminine lines.
Laurids Lønborg, was born in Shanghai, China, in 1917 to a Chinese mother and a Danish father. He moved to Denmark to do his military service in 1937 and started his wickerwork business in Denmark during the war. Grete Jalk started her collaboration with Laurids Lønborg in the 1950’s. The piece de resistance is this chair which showed off her design principles and his skill in wickerwork.

“Racquet Chair”. An extremely rare pair of easy chairs designed by Helge Vestergaard Jensen. They have an American walnut frame, back and seat with nylon strings, headrest with white chamois leather, counterweight in the shape of brass ball and loose seat cushion with redish brown leather. Made and stamped by cabinetmaker Søren Horn, Copenhagen. The use of the strings for the back and seat gives the chair an appearance of lightness. This together with the head bolster which can be adjusted via the brass ball counterweight makes for a comfortable well designed chair.

Helge Vestergaard Jensen was a Danish designer highly recognised for his contribution to the mid-century modern movement. He is best known for his meticulous craftsmanship and sculptural approach to design. Born in Denmark, Jensen developed a reputation for creating pieces that seamlessly combined form and function, often characterised by their slender, organic lines and innovative yet timeless joinery techniques.

These chairs show why Jensen’s designs are celebrated for their sculptural elegance and exceptional attention to detail. He has the ability to craft chairs that are striking and ergonomically sound— creating a graceful balance of lightness and sturdiness. Coveted by collectors and design enthusiasts worldwide, the chairs are iconic examples of Danish Modernism.

Rare pendant light, “PH 3/3” by Poul Henningsen for Louis Poulsen, marked “PAT APPL DRP 304526”.
This early PH pendant has a patinated browned brass bayonet socket house and all original single layer opaline glass shades. Made by Louis Poulsen between 1926-1928. It is a single owner piece and comes by descent in the family.

Poul Henningsen’s designs led to an industry defining partnership with Louis Poulsen that began in 1924. Henningsen’s ground breaking 3 shade system was developed around 1925 with production commencing 1926. The lamps marked “Pat. Apple” were produced before the patent was granted in 1928, as such lamps so marked were made only between 1926-1928. Although is difficult to determine with certainty the actual number of “Pat Appl” pieces remaining, we can assume the number to be small.
