What's Your Story Slam is the storytelling events arm of WYSH. This event is created to build the culture of live personal storytelling in Asia.

A good pitch is not just about what you prepared.
You can have the right deck, the right data and a solid recommendation, but still lose the room if you miss what is changing around you.

It usually doesn't happen all at once. Things like when someone senior goes quiet after being engaged at the start, then there is a change in the mood from curious to something closer to resistance. Others being when the energy in the room drops, and you find yourself pushing harder just to keep the conversation moving.

That is why reading the room matters and an important skill to have.
Not to guess what other people think, but catching the signals early enough to adapt before you lose them and how you respond.

Grand Slam Big Show Down brings back the slam winners from this past year for one final round. This time they're not just telling a story, they're going head to head for the title of Grand Slam Champion, and it happens on the biggest stage we do all year.

"I came for one story. I stayed thinking about mine."

That's the kind of thing we hear after almost every show, in comments, in DMs, in conversations with people who didn't expect a night out to turn into something they'd still be thinking about days later. Some come as first-timers, some as regulars, but the reaction is almost always the same, a mix of surprise and quiet reflection.

That's the effect live storytelling has, and it's exactly what you'll get at Grand Slam, our biggest night of the year. Our slam winners from the past twelve months return to compete for the title of Grand Slam Champion, on our biggest stage yet.

"I went to Sapa, Vietnam looking for something. I just didn't know what that something was yet."

That's where Rae Fung's story starts, until she met Grandma Mao. A conversation that wasn't supposed to change anything ended up shifting how Rae saw her whole life, the small realization that meaning isn't something you find once and keep. It's something you notice, again and again, if you're paying attention.
It's the kind of story that doesn't come up in small talk, the one you carry quietly until you finally find the right room to say it in.

That room is Unbound. Real people, real stories, the ones they've never said out loud before this stage. No competition, no voting, no recording, just a space built to actually hold what someone's ready to finally share.

Today's the last day. Early bird for Unbound and super early bird for Grand Slam both close tonight. ⏳

We don't usually push a deadline this hard, but this one's real.

On October 2, five storytellers step onto the Unbound stage to share something they've never told publicly before. No competition, no voting, no recordings, just a room built to hold a story safely, once.

Here's what we've noticed over the years watching people book, or not book, for nights like this. The ones waiting for the "right moment" almost always end up waiting past the point where it still made sense to. A deadline does the deciding for you, ready or not.

There's a shift that happens in most conversations that you've probably missed before, without even realizing it.

Power doesn't always change hands because someone raises their voice or takes control. Sometimes the shift is much quieter.

Someone who was speaking confidently suddenly gets quieter the moment a senior person walks in. A question that sounded neutral, but the tone changes and it starts to feel like a challenge. Someone who was engaged stops contributing, while someone else starts taking up more of the room.

These small changes tell you a lot about what's actually happening beneath the conversation. The more you notice them, the easier it becomes to decide how you want to respond.

Good communication doesn't have to sound perfect.

We often confuse polished with good. Someone can be rehearsed, articulate, technically flawless and still fail to actually connect with the room.

The strongest communicators do more than speak well. They listen, they stay present, they notice reactions from the audience, they adapt to the environment and they respond instead of reciting.

People connect with presence, not perfection. You don't need every sentence to land flawlessly, you need to sound like you're actually there instead.

The goal was never to sound rehearsed, it's to be clear enough to express your thinking, and present enough to respond to what's actually happening in the room.
