ART SG remembers and pays tribute to Valentine Willie (1955 – 2026), the Sabah-born lawyer turned influential Southeast Asian art champion, gallery owner and museum director, who played a pivotal role in advancing Southeast Asian art on the global stage.

His eponymous art gallery, Valentine Willie Fine Art (VWFA), was the first art gallery to set up at Singapore’s Tanjong Pagar Distripark in 2008, leading the initial arts charge into the precinct which is now home to the Singapore Art Museum and a host of other galleries. VWFA was also active in Kuala Lumpur, Yogyakarta and Manila, all pioneering spaces for their respective scenes.

From 2015 to 2020, Willie served as creative director of the newly launched museum, Ilham Gallery (), helping to establish it as a cornerstone of Kuala Lumpur’s cultural landscape and a respected voice in regional and international contemporary art.

As ART SG awaited its launch during the pandemic, Valentine and other notable voices in the scene came together to support the fledgling art fair through a series of online talks discussing Southeast Asian art's position on the global art map, for which we are immensely grateful.

In April 2026, the VWFA (Valentine Willie Fine Art) digital archive was launched, preserving his legacy and documenting more than three decades of exhibitions, artists and cultural exchange. Discover more at https://vwfa.net/

“White Cube’s participation in ART SG has been a remarkable experience. We are pleased to announce that a significant work by Mona Hatoum from our presentation has been acquired by the Singapore Art Museum—an important institutional recognition that affirms the enduring relevance of the artist’s practice. In addition, we were delighted to place several major works with distinguished collectors, including pieces by Ibrahim Mahama, Raqib Shaw, Michael Armitage, Cai Guo-Qiang, Danica Lundy and Minoru Nomata. We have been deeply impressed by the vitality and sophistication of the collector base in Singapore, whose discerning, long-term approach plays a vital role in sustaining the region’s dynamic art ecosystem.”

Faina Derman, Senior Director, White Cube (London, Hong Kong, Paris, Seoul, New York)

Singapore Art Museum presents Hiroshi Sugimoto: Form Is Emptiness, the first major Southeast Asian survey of acclaimed Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto.

Featuring over 60 works spanning five decades, the exhibition explores Sugimoto’s meditative practice across photography, sculpture, and installation through the Buddhist concept of the Five Elements — Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and Void.

Moving between materiality and metaphysics, the exhibition invites audiences to reflect on time, perception, and the nature of reality through Sugimoto’s contemplative lens.

On view from 29 May – 4 October 2026

ART SG 2026 was attended by directors, curators, and patrons from over 40 local and international museums, institutions, foundations, and associations. Multiple museum acquisitions took place, including Toledo Museum of Art (Ohio) acquiring Obiora Udechukwu’s seminal painting, ‘Blue Figures (Refugees)’ from kó artspace (Lagos).

Obiora Udechukwu is one of Nigeria’s most influential artists and poets and a leading figure of Nigeria’s Nsukka school. His artistic career began in the late 1960s at the dawn of the Nigerian Civil War. Part of the second wave of modern artists at Nigerian universities after independence, Udechukwu studied art at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in Southeastern Nigeria. An important center for art education, The Nsukka school is best known for the revival of uli, an Igbo art tradition that was historically used for body art and wall murals. Udechukwu’s intimate association with the Nsukka art department, where he taught art for many years until his migration to the United States in the mid-1990s, foregrounds his modernist explorations of uli as a potent resource in studio practice.

The fourth edition of ART SG welcomed the launch of The TVS Initiative for Indian and South Asian Contemporary Art, placing a spotlight on contemporary art practices from the South Asian region.

Curatorially advised by Studio Public Memory and led by Srinivas Aditya Mopidevi, the initiative brought South Asia's rich artistic perspectives and cultural narratives into focus through "South Asia Insights", a dedicated pavilion showcasing works from Aicon Gallery, Gajah Gallery, Gallery Art Positive, Latitude 28, Nature Morte, Sakshi Gallery, Sundaram Tagore, and Vadehra Art Gallery.

Completing the program was an artist talk with Jitish Kallat, one of India's most influential contemporary voices, whose work reflects a sustained engagement with time, history, and the idea of progress.

South Asia Insights is a new participation format at ART SG, taking the form of a pavilion-style curated exhibition showcasing artists from India, South Asia, and their diasporas.

Applications are open for the next edition of ART SG, to be held from 22 to 24 January 2026 (VIP Preview and Vernissage 21 January) at Marina Bay Sands. Visit artsg.com/apply for more information.
