A lovely afternoon of flowers, colour and watercolour!

Thank you to everyone who joined me for my Still Life: Flower in Bloom Watercolour Arrangement workshop at Overjoyed.

I really enjoyed the beautiful studio setup — my floral paintings on the wall, fresh flowers on the table, and a lovely space to paint and explore different ways of interpreting a flower arrangement.

We explored how to create a pleasing flower arrangement and turn it into a painting through shape, value and colour, starting with a quick first wash before deciding how much detail to develop.

🌸 From first wash to finished painting 🌸
This painting began with a quick, loose first wash, focusing on shape, value and colour design rather than details.
From there, how much detail you add is really up to you — keep it loose and expressive, or develop selected areas further.

At my workshop this Saturday, we’ll explore how to:
- create an interesting flower arrangement and composition
- establish shapes, values and colours from the start
- simplify flowers and foliage without painting every petal
- develop the painting with a mix of loose and more defined brushwork

It’s not about getting every flower “perfect” — it’s about having fun with the process and making the painting your own. 😊

I had the pleasure of conducting one of the guided tours at the Singapore Watercolour Society Annual Exhibition.

It was wonderful sharing observations on the artists’ use of brushstrokes, colours, subjects and composition, along with watercolour techniques and composition concepts, and of course, a little about my own paintings. 😊 Hearing visitors’ thoughts along the way made it even more enjoyable!

There are guided tours every day at 2pm and 4pm.

The exhibition is open until tomorrow, 10 September, at SCCC, Level 7. Do come by and enjoy the artworks before the exhibition ends!

Here’s the second of my two watercolour paintings at the Singapore Watercolour Society Annual Exhibition — “Still Waters, Ancient Rocks.”

Inspired by Yan’an’s rugged Wave Valley, it portrays the quiet waters, weathered rocks and lush greenery — a moment of stillness amidst the enduring strength of the ancient earth.

I’m happy to share that two of my watercolour paintings will be part of the Singapore Watercolour Society Annual Exhibition, from 4–10 September at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC), 7th floor.

Phyllis Chong, In Gentle Light 柔光里, 76 cm x 56 cm, 2026

Phyllis is a watercolour artist and teacher. A member of the Singapore Watercolour Society since 2017, she currently serves as its Secretary-General, contributing actively to the growth and vibrancy of the local watercolour community.

Before pursuing art full-time, Phyllis was a polytechnic lecturer. Today, she devotes her time to painting and teaching watercolour. Drawing on her years of teaching experience, she is passionate about helping others discover the joy of painting and build confidence in their artistic journey.

Her artworks have been featured in exhibitions, charity events, publications such as Our Neighbourhood Series and Let's Draw Singapore, as well as community magazines and postcards.

For Phyllis, art is a lifelong journey of learning and discovery. She enjoys sharing her experiences, techniques, and insights with fellow artists and students, believing that learning becomes richer when it is shared.

Another little memory from Iceland, in watercolour.

This painting was done as a demonstration for my students — another reminder that inspiration can come from the smallest and simplest places.

The subject is Öxarárfoss, a small waterfall in Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park. Much smaller than Iceland’s more famous waterfalls like Gullfoss, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, but beautiful in its own quiet way.

I remember our guide telling us it was “just around the corner” — somehow, it felt much further as we walked towards it! 😄 I was so focused on the waterfall that I almost missed a low barrier and nearly ended up in the water! 😂 Thankfully, I stayed dry.

Happy to share that my watercolour “The Journey” has been selected for the upcoming PWS exhibition.

This painting was inspired by my trip to Greenland. We didn't get to where we had intended, but the beautiful views from above became an unexpected part of the journey.

Sometimes, the journey may take us somewhere different, but there is still beauty along the way.

Grateful to have my work included in the exhibition. A heartfelt thank you to my teachers and friends for your encouragement and support throughout my journey.

Title: An Unexpected Detour

We never made it to Ilulissat in Greenland. Arctic weather rerouted our plans, and instead we spent less than 24 hours in the capital city, Nuuk.

This painting captures the quiet, windswept feeling of Greenland as I experienced it—vast, rugged and just a little out of reach. It wasn't the Greenland I had imagined, but it was the Greenland I came to know.

Life is much like travel - embrace the unexpected and be rewarded with new discoveries and unexpected beauty.
