IndianRaga Singapore wishes its viewers a happy Navaratri/Dussehra and is delighted to present our festive offering Nama Ramayanam - a beautiful Bharatanatyam presentation depicting the life of Lord Rama.
Nama Ramayanam is a popular composition written by sage Valmiki and consists of 108 verses which are divided into six chapters: Bala-kanda, Ayodhya-kanda, Aranya-kanda, Kiskindha-kanda, Sundara-kanda and Yuddha-kanda. A devout Hindu believes that if he reads the Ramayana(story of Rama) and meditate on the name "Rama", his sins would be washed off and he would be one step closer to attaining salvation. However in today's current times it is practically impossible to read the entire Ramayana on a daily basis. Therefore it has been widely accepted that the chanting of the Nama Ramayanam daily which generally takes less than 10 minutes would derive you the same benefits.
The doyen of Carnatic music Smt. MS Subbulakshmi has popularized the Nama Ramayanam with her divine rendition of the Nama Ramayanam and this dance presentation is using this popular rendition in Ragamalika and in Talam Adi.
And presenting this piece for us are dancers, Swarna Varsha who is also the choreographer of the presentation, Krishnan Unni, Aishwarya Ganesan, Ritika Iyer and Shreya Murthy.
This piece was part of a specially curated presentation by IndianRaga Singapore for the 2021 RamaNavami festival organised by Hindi Endowment Board, Singapore
