From infancy, many of our kids progressed from cooing to babbling to the much anticipated first word (and ๐ฅฐ๐ฅฐdid that feel like some magic).
As humans, weโre pre-wired to hear, understand, and produce language. Learning to read, however, isnโt a natural skill that we pick up so readily. Itโs actually really complex. We now know, through decades of research, that the most effective way to teach our kids how to read is through explicit, systematic instruction.
The secret to creating this magic lies within letter-sound correspondence and phonological and phonemic awareness practices which happen to be sound-based work (โphonoโ = sound) that we can learn and practice with our eyes closed.
