“We’ve come to the end of Balek Kampung; it’s been a pleasure keeping you company this evening. I’ve got one last piece for you before I sign off…”

The cast and crew of Balek Kampung would like to give a HUGE thank you to the festival team over at the The Twenty-Something Theatre Festival 2016- Kheng Hua, Benedict, Zee, Evelyn, Steve- for giving us the chance to bring this script to life, and to share this story with our family and friends and members of the theatre-going public who trusted us enough to spend an evening of their lives with us. Thank you for your patience, for putting up with our inexperience, for gently nudging us in the right direction whenever our foolhardy twenty-something minds got in the way, for answering our gazillion-and-one questions…. the list goes on and on. We can never thank you enough!

An equally HUGE thank you to our set designers TK Hay and Sarah Chua, costume designers Augustina Ongah and Jiahui, and multimedia designer Benedict Khoo for your hard work, commitment, faith, and dedication to making sure our show looked perfect. Without you guys, our little world of space-time bombings and contradictory timelines would not have materialised. You were the ones who literally built what we previously could only imagine in our heads. How amazing is that!!!!

And lastly, thank you to all those who trusted us to gainfully occupy an evening of your life. We are humbled and honoured that we got to make you laugh, make you think, make you confused, make you wonder what the heck just happened in there… Whatever it was, we are grateful that we got to touch your lives in one way or another, as is the true magic of theatre.

All our love,
The Kampung

And... the full review by sayang Ng Yi-Sheng is out (hugs) Thank you for dropping by to our Kampung, we hope to see the rest of you there!

By Ng Yi-Sheng I spent last weekend at the Twenty-Something Theatre Festival (see my reviews here and here), and I figured I couldn’t stay away for their closing week. Once again, I caught three productions in the “Fresh” category: new works selected out of a pool of 69 submissions; each under an ho...

For our playwright David Khoo, this is what Balek Kampung is:

"Home, its missing spiritual dimension, the perils of taking two-dimensional approaches to three-dimensional issues (especially history), and counterpoint superseding harmony."

David Khoo is a barely-legal participant of the Twenty-Something Theatre Festival, having been born nearly thirty years ago at the age of ninety. A philosopher by training, his sudden descent into the steaming mulligatawny pot of theatre-making has prompted him to wonder if he should run away screaming or take cooking lessons. When not flailing about in soup, he works at a company that helps other people make small widgets into bigger widgets, thus justifying the existence of JC economics textbooks. He enjoys the works of various long-dead white and yellow men, such as Plato, Bach, and Zhuang Zi, and dislikes speaking in third person for the sake of publicity. (Admin: Touché.)
