Calling all art history enthusiasts and those interested in art conservation and restoration!

Join us on 23 March (Sunday) at the National Gallery Singapore’s Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorium and Foyer for an enriching afternoon composed of a special documentary screening, lecture, and panel discussions on artwork conservation.

Following the recent restoration project on Chen Wen Hsi’s 190x488cm painting《Gibbons》– now on display at National Gallery Singapore – our restorer, Ms Eve Zhang, will give a lecture and sharing alongside established conservators from the Heritage Conservation Centre Singapore. Ms Zhang’s father and renowned Chinese paintings restorer, Master Zhang, will also be present to share on the restoration of the Ming-Dynasty 《Bo Jing Nan Ming》scroll from Chinatown’s Thian Hock Keng Temple.

The same afternoon, Master Zhang will launch his book, "From Ashes to Treasures". Available in both English and Chinese, "From Ashes to Treasures" details his experience of over 60 years in traditional Chinese paintings and calligraphy restoration.

This imperial silk scroll, which was found during Thian Hock Keng’s restoration works, features the words bo jing nan ming (波靖南溟, “Calm Seas in the South Seas”) and Qing dynasty Emperor Guangxu’s seal. It was believed to be bestowed on the Hokkien community (who went on to form the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan today) by Emperor Guangxu in 1907.
