One step at a time
I decided to bring my little sketchbook with me whenever I go out, and I’m starting today. As someone who usually needs their own space to make art, this is a new step for me. I decided to sketch objects I observe along the way during my daily journey. It could be on my way to work, at my worksite, or while hanging out with my friends, and so on.
Today I observed two subjects above my head: a handgrip and a red lantern.
A green handgrip that represents the east–west train line, or at least that’s what I believe. This is an object held by so many people, whether with hope or without it, with love or hate, in happiness or sadness. But it is something we all hold onto to stop ourselves from falling when the train makes an unexpected movement. And I think in real life, it’s also comforting to have something to hold onto when we feel lost, something that supports us as we face unexpected things, especially the unpleasant ones.
Whenever we see a red lantern, we usually associate it with Chinese culture. But we should also remember that other cultures have their own types of lanterns as well. Sometimes we cannot simply label something based on what we commonly know. Depending on how you view a subject, it can carry many different meanings, even if it’s just one object. It all depends on how you think, and it doesn’t have to match what other people think.
