Ride Through Race Course Road by Jaxton Su

Ride Through Race Course Road tells the story of the former racecourse. Activities that were organised here at Little India in the past include horse racing and garland making, which are depicted in the mural. The mural was a joint effort between the artist and members of the public including migrant workers and students and teachers from Raffles Institution.

Jaxton enjoys experimenting with the ocular and illusory possibilities of colours and forms in different materials. His works portray peculiar narratives in miniature settings that are inspired by the natural environment and his exploration of the subjective self. While forming metaphorical relations between the natural phenomena and the everyday life through his works, he hopes to create a relational and experiential archetypal domain that will encourage reflection, association and perceptual shifts.

Jasmine of the City by Nadiah Alsagoff

This mural is a tribute to the migrant workers who have contributed to the construction and growth of various districts in Singapore. Similar to what the artwork depicts, the alley where the mural is located at is also popular with the workers who are taking a short break from work.

Nadiah Alsagoff is an interdisciplinary artist based in Singapore. She has graduated with a BA honours degree in Fine Art at LASALLE College of the Arts – Goldsmiths, University of London.

She is interested in the relationship between the body, the self and its position the everyday world and with other beings. Her work looks at themes of identity and existence, how people are born into a world of predetermined circumstance, and how identities are contextualised beings, tied to the world by their bodies.

Her love for plants and nature sometimes surface in her work. Formally trained as a painter, she also explores these themes through the use of the body in video and performance.

Cattleland by Eunice Lim

This mural was completed via an interactive activity with passers-by in the district. She invited members of the public (from children to young adults) to participate in the painting process. The artwork, which contains images of buffaloes, clouds and flowers, was inspired by stories from the residents about the precinct’s history and how it used to be a street filled with buffaloes due to cattle trading.

Eunice Lim is a Singapore based visual artist, who is intrigued by human relationships and narratives in culture. She translates her studies with mediums her ideas discern most appropriate for.

People and stories are at the heart of why she creates art. It is the reason that propels her practice to reflect current cultures and narratives – to connect and inspire the community with stories that would rarely be found in textbooks.

Eunice approaches her works in a systematic layered manner, the same way she believes social conditionings are formed. In the process, she re-examines the structure through origins, progress and development. Therefore, through her works, she hopes to pose an alternate understanding in the place we are acquainted with; creating new narratives through aspects of history, time and culture.

Layers by Shah Rizzal

Through Layers, Shah Rizzal conveys his belief in the necessity to preserve the architecture of a space that outlasts the need for progressive urban development. He highlights the contribution of brick makers through his depiction of the shophouses in Little India, both of which are valuable to the precinct’s rich history.

Shah Rizzal believes that through the marriage of both formal education and the unorthodox street knowledge, he can disseminate a different kind of visual art aesthetics and propagate a contemporary understanding of the current and future generation of Singapore artists.

Daily Delivery by Didier Jaba Mathieu

This mural depicts a fictional narrative of the future in Little India. The man carrying tiffins, an item used in the past, is going about his daily duties. However, the vehicles are now hovering above the ground. These elements come together as a juxtaposition of tradition and modernism in Little India.

A graffiti writer and street artist, JABA’s complex and highly refined style is a synthesis of cubism, futurism and constructivism – where planes, angles and colours are pushed to the fore from his travels and experience as a concept artist for Lucasfilm Ltd and as a lecturer for Matte Painting, Environment & Character Design at Nanyang Polytechnic. JABA continues to practice on multidisciplinary levels and recently graduated as an MA Fine Arts student at LASALLE College of the Arts.

Festival by Izzad Radzali Shah

Festival portrays Izzad Radzali Shah’s engagement with the residents of Little India. He transcribes the stories he has gathered through his interaction into various imageries and symbols that are familiar to the district.

Izzad Radzali Shah lives in a world of his own where all of his imaginations come to life. The motifs that often appear in his drawings and paintings represent the artist’s love-hate relationship with objects, people, space and time. His work often deals with the immediate and the mundane life of living in a sophisticated city like Singapore. He also enjoys music, travelling and photography.

Izzad graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from LASALLE College of the Arts in partnership with Goldsmiths, University of London in 2013.

Working Class Hero by ZERO

This artwork is popular amongst residents and visitors who frequent Little India as it is a portrait of the famous Tamil film star, Rajinikanth. ZERO conceptualised this mural with the purpose of painting it as a tribute to the migrant workers living in the district.

ZERO is the founder of RSCLS and also one of the street art pioneers in Singapore. He is also the first street artist in Singapore to be awarded the NAC Young Artist Award in 2013 for artistic excellence and his role in building the foundation and paving the way for the street art scene in Singapore.

Singapura by Remi Rough

This artwork was inspired by Sang Nila Utama’s discovery of Singapore and represents the crown that he threw into the sea when fighting for his ship’s survival amidst a raging storm. This mural is a collaboration with ArtScience Museum and Singapore Tourism Board.
(Photo taken in January 2019. Mural has been removed.)

Remi Rough continues to challenge the boundaries of contemporary painting as he traverses between the collected history of art and today’s urban lexicon. Thematically he continues to explore associations between Suprematist concepts, Abstract Expressionism and Graffiti art, which in practice and theory they become ever present. This amalgamation yields a new type of modernist painting, one that reflects his passion for the aforementioned but also his desire to re-imagine it all for todays world.

A Sailor’s Guide to Little India by A’shua Imran

A Sailor’s Guide to Little India is a tribute to the different cultures that harmoniously share the space in Little India. A’shua Imran envisions our ancestor’s voyage to the island and depicts them using various landmarks and historical buildings coming together in one common district.
(Photo taken in January 2019. Mural has been removed.)

A’shua Imran is a multidisciplinary artist working predominately with painting, performance & installations. He began his studies at LASALLE College of the Arts (Singapore) and received a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art (Goldsmiths, UK) in 2014. He has participated in several exhibitions and presented his works in Singapore, The Netherlands, Thailand, Israel, Egypt, U.K. South Africa and Spain. Currently, Imran is the artistic director of Mural Lingo, a Singapore-registered social enterprise engaged in the arts, education and publishing. He founded the independent platform in 2014 with the primary focus on offering an incubation space for undergraduates to develop their skills and creating opportunities for artists to practice murals in their community.

Book-A-Meeting by Eunice Lim

This mural is closely linked to the Siyamala Bookstore, which is situated just beside it, and its 30-year history. It portrays how heritage and tradition is discovered through books and stories that are written and collected over time.
