Don’t Duplicate. Extend.
For a recent combat update in Sniperbot: The Hype Game, we needed an aerial enemy that could drop bombs.
Instead of building a brand-new prefab, we extended an existing flying ranged unit and added a bombing phase as another attack state.
After dropping a bomb, it simply switches back to its default ranged behavior.
What changed under the hood:
• Added a bombing state to the same AI controller
• Reused the same movement logic and animations
• No duplicate prefab
• Oh, and we made sure bombs interact with other bombs and enemies too — which means chain explosions are possible (and honestly, kind of fun).
Why this approach matters:
• No extra assets to maintain
• No separate balancing pass for a “new” enemy
• Smaller memory footprint
• Cleaner scaling as the game grows
When enemies are built around modular states instead of rigid identities, adding variety becomes much cheaper. You’re not constantly building new content — you’re composing behavior.
