Drawing Neurons

Drawing Neurons What happens when artists collaborate with neuroscientists?

Conversations, ideas, new artworks... in the long term, can artists have a role to play in where science goes?

Did you know? The Society for Neuroscience meeting is going on full swing in Chicago right now. You have to agree that neurons look good...they also carry information from the way they were specifically stained and how they are being imaged.

This image shows dorsal root ganglion sensory neurons of the vesicular glutamate transporter 3 (Vglut3) lineage (red). Neurons are also labeled with antibodies against βIII-tubulin (green) and neurofilament heavy chain (blue). Mentholsensitive Vglut3-lineage neurons are a highly excitable population that fire robust trains of tetrodotoxin-sensitive action potentials and show unique sodium channel inactivation kinetics. Did you know that your brain (like a fish brain) is active even when you are at rest? Suresh Jesuthasan's lab tries to uncover which part of the brain is active depending on the different emotions being felt. Here is a still of a movie showing parts of the brain "firing" while at rest. The video of a brain at rest will be visible at The Substation, 22 October

We visited Dr Ajay Mathuru’s lab in the Biopolis to find out what set up he uses to test fish’s addiction to ni****ne and alcohol. Like many scientists at the frontier of science, Ajay and his team had to design their own system to fit their needs precisely. It is a beautiful piece of clever engineering. If you want to see and understand how it works, come down to the Substation exhibition at the end of the month as one of his lab’s apparatus will be on display.
