I love side quests.

Jump into the unknown. Gain experience, get new perspectives, do unusual things and meet new people. Fantastic people.
Taking part in the KYIVAN RUS FESTIVAL | EASTERN WINDS AT BIRKA 🌬️ festival at Birka Vikingastaden was one such side quest. I was there as a volunteer, market vendor and festival guest.

3 days - intensive, inspiring and refreshing.

Today I'm sitting here, writing code and navigating technical issues, but my mind keeps going back to those goats at Birka that I was responsible for feeding.

Did they get their food in time?
I know they did. 🐐

Experimenting with finishes and making my own wood butter! Trying oils and beeswax in different proportions to see how they affect the look and feel of the wood.

I wasn't paying much attention in chemistry lessons back in school, so all this polyunsaturated fats, medium-chain triglycerides and other mambo jumbo feels a bit like black magic.

Initially, I wanted to carve a fisherman as a present for my friend in Canada, who is truly passionate about fishing.

But somewhere along the way I lost control.
Fishing rod, a big fish, a small fish. Then an old boot. Another fish. A bucket. A tiny dock... I got a full scene!

I love making my carvings interactive. It's probably an echo of playing with Lego as a kid. Every little accessory adds another story to discover.

Except for classic maple syrup and Canadian ice wine, I brought home some real woodcarving treasures from Canada. Each one has its own story. Check out the carousel if you're curious - each photo has its own caption.

An orangutan wizard - gift carved by Sebastian . I was incredibly lucky to visit Sebastian's workshop and meet him in person. It's such a surreal feeling to meet someone from the other side of the Atlantic whom you've known through Instagram.
As you can probably guess, one of my little gnomes has now permanently moved to Canada 🇨🇦

I googled "woodcarving" and found Chipping Away Inc. shop just a short distance from where I was staying. I only planned to have a quick look, but ended up spending a couple of hours there. We had a great conversation about tools, carving culture, and wood. I bought a fantastic book on carving faces and even received a piece of Canadian basswood as a gift. Thank you so much, Cindy!

I also picked up an issue of Woodcarving Illustrated Magazine . You can't really find it here in Northern Europe. As it turns out, it was the last issue ever sold in shops, as the Woodcarving Illustrated is now available by subscription only.

The real reason I crossed the Atlantic, though, was to catch up with an old friend.
Some trips are about the places you visit. Others are about the people waiting for you when you arrive.
Thank you for the awesome Leatherman multitool, but even more for all the laughs and memories we shared, Roman Rezvov ❤️

Can you imagine all of it fits in this little wooden backpack? 😀

With that being said - this series of travel-posts is finished. I hope it was entertaining and thank you for following.
