Quite often, people involved in the world of vocal performance separate technique from artistry; they are confused by the fact that when someone is focusing on coordination, he/she can't be focused solely on communication. The fact remains that technique involves "building" an instrument so it can be "played" in the most effective way. Before it is built, it is impossible for it to be used for the highest level of communication. Once the voice is fully coordinated, however, the singer has endless dynamic expression at his/her disposal. Patience and dedication to the process of coordinating and understanding the voice is imperative. A singer must know her/his voice better than anyone in order to negotiate the highly varying opinions of directors, music directors, conductors, agents, etc. It is of the utmost importance to know what your voice can and can't do. After all, one should not just be looking to get one job...one should be focused on getting job after job after job for a lifetime; this is what being a performer is all about and this is dependant upon establishing a sustainable technique. One must commit to the process of building his/her instrument and as the muscles get more coordinated the singer's innate musicality/communicative ability will come shining through. In short, a solid technique is the key that unlocks not only vocal health and efficiency/sustainability, but also beauty, clear communication and, ultimately, artistry.
