Denna utställning är ett möte mellan vildhäst- och hjortskinnstrummor från Dartmoore södra England och renskinnstrummor från Purkijaur utanför Jokkmokk.
I utställningen ingår, förutom trummorna, även Gun Hofgaards bildbroderier, målningar, glaspärlor och grafiska blad på temat trummor och träd. Likaså en nytagen film av Cedar Shaw -Birth of the Drum, med nykomponerad musik av Nina Nordvall Vahlberg. Hennes musik ligger även som bakgrund i utställningsrummet. I glasmontrar finner du Carolyn Hillyers laxskinnstrummor och Gun Hofgaards glaspärlor. I korta workshops erbjuds hantverk, trumrytmer, berättelser och sånger utifrån olika teman runt träd och trummor. Fria broderier som skapas i workshops och även foton som tas här ingår i utställningen.
Carolyn Hillyer och Gun Hofgaard har tillverkat trummor och haft workshops i många år, trädens liv - allas liv, har varit en av drivkrafterna i deras arbeten inom musik, konst och konsthantverk. Nina Nordvall Vahlberg har arbetat med rytmer och trädtema i många av sina tidigare kompositioner och musikprojekt. Cedar Shaw har inspirerats av Carolyn Hillyers och Gun Hofgaards verk i sitt foto- och filmskapande inför denna utställning.
Centralt i rummet, omgivet av trummor och bilder står ett bord med material för -Måla med nål och tråd. Du är hjärtligt välkommen att sitta ner en stund och brodera din trädbild och sedan gärna fästa upp den på anslagsväggen. I sitthörnan kan du se Cedar Shaws film -Birth of the Drum, där finns även några mindre rytminstrument av ben och klövar, samt Cds och kort till salu.

Carolyn Hillyer en känd brittisk konstnär, musiker, traditionell trumbyggare som har varit workshopsledare i mer än 30 år. Hon bor och arbetar i en lantgård på Dartmoorheden i södra England. Först och främst tillverkar hon trummor med skinn från kronhjortar och vildhästar, som lever i området där hon bor, skinnen är beredda på gården. Vildhästtrummorna är unika i UK, hon har varit en traditionell Dartmoorponnyägare i över 20 år. Hon har givit ut 14 musikalbum och reser med sin konst och ger konserter och workshops runt om i världen och har gjort många resor till den Sibiriska arktiska regionen och i Sapmi.

Sedan Gun Hofgaard bosatt sig i Jokkmokk har hon målat, byggt utställningar, illustrerat, varit dekoratör, fotoassistent och slöjdat. Hon har byggt trummor och haft workshops i trumbygge samt andra rytminstrument under tjugo år. Hon broderar och gör glaspärlor parallellt med trumtillverkningen. Under många år intervjuade hon äldre personer i Purkijaur och skrev en bok utifrån detta och illustrerade den. Hon har även gjort några andra mindre böcker med sina bilder och dikter.

Nina Nordvall Vahlberg. En jojkerska, accordeonist och kompositör med många uttrycksformer på sin palett. Skriver vacker, melodiös och rytmisk musik för konsert, teater och film. Hon ha turnerat som musiker sedan 1990 i folkmusikgrupperna Qwinnen, Gast och Gázis, samt i olika föreställningar som teatermusiker på Västerbottensteatern och i Giron Sámi Theáter. Nina har skrivit musiken till filmen i denna utställning och deltar i projektet som pedagog med trumma och jojk.

Cedar Shaw fotograf, storyteller och filmare. Hennes arbete dokumenterar liv och berättelser från människor, inspirerad av de nära vänskaper och gemenskaper där hon tillbringat tid. Hon har arbetat för festivaler, drivit events och varit deltagit i fotoutställningar.

This exhibition is a meeting of wild horse and red deer skin drums from Dartmoor, in the southwest of England, and reindeer skin drums from Purkijaur, Jokkmokk.
The exhibition involves a number of artists. As well as the drums, you can also see: Gun Hofgaard's embroideries, painting, graphics and glass beads; and Cedar Shaw's film 'Birth of the Drum' with music by Nina Nordvall Vahlberg. In the glass cases you will find Carolyn Hillyer's fish drums and Gun Hofgaards glass beads. We will be offering workshops in yoik, drum rhythms, making small instruments and 'Painting with Needle and Thread' (free-style embroidery). This exhibition is based on the the life of the tree, which has been an inspiration to the work of these artists for many years.
In the centre of the room, surrounded by drums, we have our workshop table with materials for 'Painting with Needle and Thread'. We welcome you to sit down for a while, to make your own tree picture and then add it to our board. In the corner you can watch Cedar Shaw's film 'Birth of the Drum’, with some of Gun's instruments also hanging there. On this table there are books, music CD's and cards for sale.

Carolyn Hillyer is a renowned British artist, musician, writer, traditional drum maker and workshop teacher of thirty years standing who lives and works on an ancient hill farm high on the moors of southwest England. She primarily makes drums with red deer and wild horse skins that are gathered from her landscape and prepared at her farm. The wild horse drums are unique in UK; Carolyn has been a traditional Dartmoor pony herder for over 20 years. She has released 14 music albums and travels with her work, giving concerts and workshops around the world including many journeys to the Arctic Siberia and Sapmi.

Nina Nordvall Vahlberg is a yoik singer, accordionist and composer from the Forest-Sami culture in the north of Sweden. She writes beautiful and rhythmic melodies for concerts, theatre and film. Nina has been touring since 1990 in different folk music bands such as Qwinnen, Gast and Gázis. She has also performed in different theatre productions at Västerbottensteatern and Giron Sámi Teáhter. She composed the music for the film that is showing in this exhibition and is also participating in the project as a workshop teacher. She teaches yoik and drumming to children.

Cedar Shaw is a photographer, storyteller and filmmaker. Her work documents the lives and stories of people, inspired by the close friendships she develops within the communities where she spends time. She has worked for many festivals, organised arts events and participated in photography exhibitions, in the UK and elsewhere in Europe.

Since Gun Hofgaard moved to Jokkmokk she has been painting, illustrating, making handicrafts, built several exhibitions, been a decorator and a photography assistant. For twenty years Gun has also been making, and teaching the making of, drums and other instruments. In addition her work consists of embroideries, graphics and creating glass beads. Throughout her time in Jokkmokk, Gun has interviewed elder people living in the village Purkijaur, recording their personal accounts about self-sustainable living, forestry, farming and fishing, which she later produced as a book that included her own illustrations. Gun has also made some smaller books that feature her pictures and poems.
