About the artist: Halimatu Iddrisu
Halimatu Iddrisu (born in Accra, Ghana) is an artist currently living and working in Kumasi, Ghana. Her practice explores visibility, identity and emancipation with a focus on marginalized women and the evolving politics of the hijab.
Working across painting and community-based encounters, she draws from lived experiences and collective memory to challenge imposed narratives and reclaim space for voices often silenced.
Central to her work is the hijab, which she approaches not as a fixed symbol but as a dynamic language of power, beauty and agency. Through fabrics, textures and gestures of wearing, she transforms personal and communal stories into layered visual forms that resist stereotypes and affirm multiplicity. Her practice asks: how do we move beyond the veil of misrepresentation? How can art create spaces of healing, dialogues and freedom?
Through this lens, she creates works that insist on presence, dignity and self-determination on the women’s own terms. Her collaboration with women in different zongo communities shape the foundation of her work, informing paintings, installations and mixed-media projects that blend figuration with abstraction and storytelling with material experimentation.
