Björn & Benny’s musical worlds come together in new Swedish stage production
A new stage production celebrating the musical theatre legacy of Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson will premiere in Sweden this autumn, bringing together material from three of the songwriting partnership’s landmark theatrical works.
Titled Björn & Benny – Mer än bara två B:n (“More Than Just Two B’s”), the production opens at Sagateatern in Borås on October 10, 2026, presented by Scenverket.
Rather than concentrating on ABBA, the show turns its attention to the extraordinary second chapter of Björn and Benny’s creative partnership: musical theatre.
According to the official presentation from Scenverket and the City of Borås, the production draws on songs from Chess, Kristina från Duvemåla and Mamma Mia!, creating what the organisers describe as a journey through Björn and Benny’s musical world.
The concept is intriguing because these three works represent remarkably different sides of the Ulvaeus-Andersson catalogue. Chess brought their songwriting into the world of international theatrical drama; Kristina från Duvemåla became their great Swedish musical epic; while Mamma Mia! transformed existing ABBA songs into one of the most commercially successful jukebox musicals in theatre history.
Bringing all three together effectively turns the evening into a portrait of Björn and Benny as composers for the stage, rather than simply the songwriting partnership behind ABBA.
The production is directed and choreographed by Yvonne Schönborg Strömer, with Göran Åhlfeldt as musical director. Scenverket held open auditions earlier this year for both soloists and ensemble performers, seeking singers and dancers aged 16–70.
Seven performances are currently listed at Sagateatern between October 10 and October 31, with a running time of approximately two hours and 50 minutes. Tickets start at SEK 295.
Björn & Benny – Mer än bara två B:n brings those theatrical strands together on one Swedish stage — another reminder that the Ulvaeus-Andersson partnership ultimately became considerably larger than the pop group that made their names famous.
