Second description of one of the Nua tribes

The Yate Tribe:

Location: The Yate tribe resides in the rainforest, particularly in the highlands with open spaces.

Specialty: Like a hawk, they possess keen eyesight, powerful claws, large wings, and sharp beaks (in their hawk form). The Yate are swift, fast, and light. Their eyesight is so precise that they never miss their target.

Fighting Style: They wield bows and arrows. Watching the Yate fight is like witnessing a dance, as they fight with grace, precision, and speed.

Village Life: The Yate invest heavily in trade. They enjoy gardening, fishing, and hunting. Their villages, located in the rolling hills, are easily spotted due to the bright colors they use to dye their traditional attire. Their villages are always vibrant with color, art, and music. The Yate take pride in improving their tools, whether for entertainment or warfare. Though known for being fierce warriors with a precise fighting style, they are lighthearted people.

Personality: Funny, fiercely loyal, and artistic at heart.

Diet: Freshwater fish, taro, cassava, and an abundance of vegetables.

Nua - The creative process

A process that has taken almost 1 year to write and another 6 months to bring to life. Writing process was one part of the story, however it was the illustrations that really completed the vision.
From constant research, to rewrites to re-draws.

Here’s one of the first drafts of the illustrations when creating these characters. We have posted about the Lukim tribe (the Crocodile shapeshifters) and now we have 5 more tribes to introduce to you.

Tribes in the island of Nua:

Introducing the Lukim Tribe:

Location: Daru Rainforest area, with their villages situated beside the Tiri River.

Specialty: Like crocodiles, they have exceptional night vision. They possess a strong sense of smell, with a scent radius of 2 km. They can control their shapeshifting, choosing whether to reveal their crocodile form.

Fighting Style: They use their jaws, claws, and wield their war clubs as if they were extensions of their arms. Like crocodiles, they surround and attack their prey. They are known for ripping the heads off their enemies.

Village Life: The men are fishermen and farmers, while the women are gatherers and gardeners. There’s a saying, “The Lukim can make anything grow,” which holds true. Their villages are filled with acres of agriculture. They are known for having “lively” hands and focus their attention on the biodiversity of the rainforest, seeing themselves as protectors of its creatures and plants.

Personality: The Lukim tribe is known to be brave and noble. They have a reputation for humble leadership and loyal warriors.

Diet: Their diet consists of freshwater fish, eels, taro plants, cassava, taro roots, and the tropical fruits and vegetables available around them.

Hello,

We’ve created a story inspired by the iTaukei oral history of the “Kato ni Mana.” The characters are drawn from tribes across Melanesia, and the story is a love story that celebrates a region of the South Pacific that has not been thoroughly explored.

This project is a tribute to our ancestors, created out of enjoyment and as an opportunity to explore our creative passions.

Crocodile Men of Sepik Province,Papua New Guinea🐊🇵🇬.

So intrigued by the Unique Ceremony for boys entering manhood(Rite of passage).
The ceremony includes Crocodile Scarification, a ritual where the skin is covered in deep cuts which cascade down the boy’s back, chest and buttocks, imparting the look and feeling of a crocodile’s skin. The marks are representative of the tooth marks left behind by the crocodile as it “swallowed” the young man during the ceremony.

Crocodiles are sacred to the local people. According to old stories it states that the evolved from crocodiles, becoming land-dwellers when they migrated from the nearby Mighty Sepik River.
