The first episode of Ossos do Ofício, the Barbot Bernardo podcast, is now out.
Our co-founder Miguel Barbot interviews professionals working in the cultural and creative sectors, discussing what is particular about their businesses and sharing experiences that may be useful to anyone thinking of venturing into these fields.
In this first episode, Miguel talks to Joana Correia , a type designer with fifteen years' experience and the founder of Nova Type Foundry .
We talked about her career, from her early work with Google Fonts to her collaboration with The Type Founders in the United States, and above all about what is rarely discussed: how much it costs to design a typeface, how long it takes before it starts to pay off, and how you build a sustainable business in a market that is global but niche (and dominated by large platforms).
The conversation covers sales and licensing channels, the industry's shift towards subscription models, and what all of this means for independent foundries, many of them micro-businesses.

We usually recommend three books from our library at a time, but this time we’ve decided to slip an ‘extra’ into the bag. Today’s series is dedicated to urban space and life in our cities, one of our areas of work and a long-standing obsession.

David Byrne - Bicycle Diaries (Faber & Faber) - Published over 15 years ago, this book is a classic for all those who look at the city with an observant eye and use how we move around as a means of observation.
It is not just another psychogeographical compendium, but rather a collection of reflections on cities, art and music, in the form of memoirs by one of the most influential artists of recent decades.

David Sim - Cidade Suave (TowerBlock Books) With a foreword by one of the ‘gods’ of urban humanisation, Jan Gehl, this is the Portuguese edition of the essential “Soft City - Building Density for Everyday Life”, a book that advocates urban density and the transformation of cities through small decisions that have a major impact on the way we experience the city.

M. Armengaud, A. Degros, R. Radulova-Stahmer (ed) - Towars Territorial Transition (Park Books) This book explores key areas of the climate transition: territory, scale, transition, resources, platforms and managing uncertainty. In a highly visual way (and with incredible infographics), it presents case studies for those concerned about the impact of climate change on urban areas, whilst also examining its relationship with peri-urban and rural areas.

The Heritex Hub book is a compilation of the fact sheets available on the Heritex Toolbox, a resource website for researchers, entrepreneurs, designers, and students in the textile sector.

Throughout the rich history of textiles, people have experimented with different materials, invented new techniques and explored their creativity through patterns, colours and ornamentation, whilst facing challenges in sourcing materials and using resources, all the while maintaining a balance with the environment. 

The book is therefore an excellent tool for anyone seeking new materials for their creations and products, or for those seeking an inspiring story grounded in the sustainability and beauty of materials.

The Heritex-Hub project is a networked resource and knowledge centre created to support the transition of the textile and fashion sector by studying centuries of textile heritage.

This ‘toolbox’ was coordinated by the scientists Francisco B. Gomes Francisco B. Gomes (archaeologist, University of Lisbon) and Paula Nabais (heritage scientist, Nova FCT), in collaboration with researchers from across Europe.

Barbot Bernardo coordinated the development of the online platform, and Ofício, our design studio, was responsible for the project’s entire visual identity and graphic design.

Last week, we paid tribute to our dear Vasco, who left us a year ago. At a gathering of friends and family, organised by Tiago Ferreira, his partner at Aliados Consulting, this book was presented, featuring contributions from many who crossed paths with Vasco during his many adventures.

Vasco, as well as being a great friend and an inspiration, was a very important person to Barbot Bernardo and to Ofício. He believed in our work like no one else and became someone we could call the perfect client. 

So, when Tiago proposed producing this book, we offered to design and edit it, involving the whole Ofício team in the project.

When we conceived the book, we thought of Granja do Vasco, beginning and ending with photographs taken by Miguel at what was the meeting place for many conversations and summer swims. 

Within its pages, the dozens of contributions, almost in unison, agree on everything. Vasco was an exceptional person, a dreamer and someone who could see the best in each of us.

In addition to everyone’s memories, we now have this collective testimony, almost like a repository of Vasco’s legacy, something he cared so deeply about.

Books informing our practice #4

This week’s suggestions are especially for those who are just starting out in the arts or trying to ‘navigate’ the complexities of the art world.
The truth is that, despite all the love we may have for art, we cannot sugar-coat the reality and claim that the life of an artist or creative professional is a bed of roses, because, generally speaking, it isn’t. And, unfortunately, simply having ‘talent’ is just not enough.
In these three books we’re recommending today, we offer a slightly more positive perspective for anyone wishing to venture into this world.

In his essay ‘The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction’ (published in 1934), Walter Benjamin addresses artists and discusses their struggles in an age in which creative work can be reproduced and mass-produced through photography, photoprinting and other techniques. He also discusses the ‘aura’ of the original work and how it is diminished through reproduction. Ninety years on, we are having the same conversation, which is somewhat comforting.

“One might subsume the eliminated element in the term “aura” and go on to say: that which withers in the age of mechanical reproduction is the aura of the work of art. This is a symptomatic process whose significance points beyond the realm of art. One might generalize by saying: the technique of reproduction detaches the reproduced object from the domain of tradition. By making many reproductions it substitutes a plurality of copies for a unique existence. And in permitting the reproduction to meet the beholder or listener in his own particular situation, it reactivates the object reproduced. These two processes lead to a tremendous shattering of tradition which is the obverse of the contemporary crisis and renewal of mankind.”

This little book is both a caricature of the art ‘market’ and a guide to navigating it. The recommendations we’re sharing today have been selected with those in mind who are currently concerned with the development of their creative business, marketing issues, growth models and public funding for their projects.

The first, “How to Win Work”, is already a classic and, although written from an architectural perspective, is easily applicable to other creative sectors that have to work with both private clients and through competitions.

The second, Do Scale, serves as a slight counterpoint to Paul Jarvis’s “Company of One”, which we recommended in our previous post. However, like everything from “The Do Book Co”, it offers an ethical and sustainable perspective on growth, showing different paths to follow.

Finally, the new book by our friend Francisco Cipriano, which we have been recommending on our social media for a few weeks now, is an essential guide for anyone running a creative business or cultural organisation and seeking European funding for their projects.
