The next WORKSHOP is:
“Image Intervention” -with artist facilitator Leticia Barreto

17 JAN: 16h - 19h

What are the metaphorical meanings of the acts of cutting, tearing, covering, overlaying, and concealing an image?

1st session - Introduction to Image Intervention. Contextualization of the concept of intervention on images with collage techniques through examples of historical and contemporary artists. Practical exercises using the language of collage. No previous experience in collage is necessary.

Letícia Barreto (Brazil). Multidisciplinary artist and art educator based in Alverca - Lisbon, Portugal. She studied fine arts at Istituto Lorenzo di Medici in Florence, (IT) with a Rotary Foundation scholarship. She holds a Master’s degree in Visual Arts and Intermedia from Évora University in Portugal. She is an art teacher at Nextart, in Lisbon, PT. She has exhibited internationally since 2000 in institutions, cultural centers, and art fairs (AKAA – Paris, Prizm – Miami, Zonamaco – Mexico, and Just Mad – Madrid). In her artwork, the concept usually determines the language and the technique, be it painting, drawing, photography, visual analogy, collage, intervention on objects, installation, or urban intervention.

By mixing cutout (2D animation) with the real world (stop-motion) we can explore meaningful relations between different types of images

The moving image doesn’t need to be bound to a two-dimensional plane, neither does it need to be solely a three-dimensional medium. Animation, with its variety of techniques, gives us the opportunity to break the boundaries between dimensions. By mixing cutout (2D animation) with the real world (stop-motion) we can explore and create meaningful relations between different types of images, we can play with perspective and perception of scale. Through the lens of animation we can explore new ways of thinking about the public space and the spaces we live in.
In this workshop every participant, working alone or as a group, will create their own animations mixing cutout-animation and stop-motion, while learning about animation’s most important principles: acceleration, deceleration, timing, spacing, anticipation, overshoot and persistence of vision.

About the artist:
Francisco Lourenço is an artist who lives and works in Lisbon. Studied Painting but has always been working with moving image as an artist, animator, in visual effects and as a motion designer in cinema and advertisement. Through narratives derived from chance, their videos isolate moments of cosmic lucidity, depicting environments populated by characters uncertain of their place. In their work there is a deep appreciation for the inherent humor and emotion of the natural world.
