A plein air continuation of our festival days in Calgary. 🇨🇦

Painting at Emerald Lake, and honestly, the colour of the water was absolutely insane.

Spending the whole day painting in a place like this, surrounded by such wonderful company… felt incredibly special. 🤍

Is 45 minutes a lot or a little?

What if it’s for a full-sheet watercolour 56×76 cm?

Well… I’m going to Canada this week! 🇨🇦

I’m heading to Calgary for the International Watercolour Festival, and I have quite a few wonderful things planned while I’m there!

🌊 August 16 at 7:00 PM — Live Demo at cSPACE Marda Loop
I’ll be painting live and sharing my process, techniques, and, of course, talking about some of my favourite subjects: water, light, reflections, movement, and all those details that make me want to paint the Sea again and again.

And after the festival, I’ll be teaching two workshops in Calgary:
August 24–26 — 3-Day Workshop
August 28–29 — 2-Day Workshop
We’re going to paint a lot of Sea in all its different moods and forms. I’ll demonstrate my techniques step by step, and there will be plenty of time for individual feedback and questions.

And the good news is that there is still a chance to join us! If you’ve been thinking about painting together with me, I would absolutely love to meet you in Calgary.

Wednesday–Friday | July 29–31

The second half of our week at Madeline Island was all about gathering inspiration and bringing it back into the studio.

Wednesday, July 29 began with a plein air session at Big Bay State Park, where we studied the clear waters of Lake Superior. Back in the studio, we focused on painting the surface of the water, and that evening we ended the day with a sunset plein air on the pier—our feet in the water while the sky slowly changed colours.

Thursday, July 30 was dedicated to developing our sunset paintings before setting off on a boat tour through the breathtaking Apostle Islands.

Friday, July 31 brought everything together. Inspired by the boat trip, we created our final paintings in the studio. The terracotta sea caves against the vibrant turquoise water completely stole my heart. That unexpected combination of warm earth tones and cool blues was impossible to resist, it had to become a painting!

This is what I love most about teaching workshops like this. Every plein air session, every walk, every boat ride becomes part of the creative process. Nature provides the inspiration, and the studio gives us the space to transform those moments into paintings.

Day 2 at Madeline Island 🇺🇸

We started the morning in the studio, painting breaking waves.

In the afternoon, we headed out for a plein air session at the Madeline Island Yacht Club. One of the things I love most about plein air painting is coming back to the comfort of the studio with fresh inspiration.

And for dessert, after dinner we took a walk through Big Bay State Park. I spent some time photographing water. Those references would become the inspiration for Wednesday morning’s studio session.

Day 1 at Madeline Island, Wisconsin, USA

We began the week by painting the crystal-clear waters of Lake Superior. It stretches so far that it feels more like the ocean than a lake. The water shifts from turquoise to deep blue, reflecting the sky and changing every day. It’s mesmerizing.

Our first lesson was all about learning to paint that incredible transparency and the rocks beneath the surface. Here, nature became the teacher, not me. 😅

Sharing this experience with such wonderful students, surrounded by the beauty of Madeline Island, was the perfect way to begin an unforgettable week.

Hello, dear all! 🤍

You’ve probably seen some announcements from event organizers already. I can now officially say that I’ll be attending the following events in 2026–2027.

Over the next two years we’ll paint together in beautiful places around the world, from the warm light of Tuscany to the glaciers of Iceland, from the Pacific coast of California to Buenos Aires and Patagonia.

I paint as if I’m putting together a puzzle. 🧩 But why?

Most people think this is just my style but It’s actually the solution to a problem I had for years.

Back in 2015, when I started painting architecture, I was trying to follow the “correct” method. I developed the entire painting evenly, building the shadows layer by layer across the whole page.

The result?

A growing pile of unfinished watercolours.

Nothing looked finished for a very long time, I lost motivation halfway through, and many paintings never made it past the awkward stage.

Everything changed during a road trip across America.

I switched to a sketchbook because I wanted to paint quickly. I wanted a sketch to look satisfying even if I only had ten or fifteen minutes before moving on.

So I stopped thinking about paintings as a whole.

Instead, I started thinking about them as puzzles.

I choose one focal point and finish it almost completely. Then I move to the next piece. And then the next.

Little by little, the painting comes together.
The biggest surprise wasn’t that I painted faster.

It was that I enjoyed painting so much more.

Even if I have to stop halfway through, I already have one beautiful, finished section. I don’t walk away from a page of unfinished washes, I walk away from something that already feels complete.

That simple change transformed the way I paint.

It helped me finish more work, fill more sketchbooks, and, most importantly, enjoy the process every single time I pick up a brush.

Sometimes changing your results has less to do with painting better… and more to do with changing the way you work.
