Samah sabawi Dr Samah Sabawi is an award winning author, playwright and poet. Her credits include the critically acclaimed plays Tales of a City by the Sea and THEM.

Sabawi’s debut novel Cactus Pear for my Beloved will be released this September. Dr Samah Sabawi is an award-winning playwright, author and poet. Her critically acclaimed play THEM won a Green Room Award for Best Writing, was shortlisted for the Nick Enright Prize for Playwriting and the Victorian Premiere Literary Awards, and was selected for the Victorian Certificate of Education playlist. THEM was also nominated by the Green Room Awards for Best Independent Production, Best Direction and Best Ensemble. Sabawi’s play Tales of a City by the Sea had more than 100 performances around the world, won two Drama Victoria Awards, was nominated for the Green Room Awards for best independent production and also selected for the Victorian Certificate of Education drama playlist. Sabawi is co-editor of Double Exposure: Plays of the Jewish and Palestinian Diasporas, winner of Patrick O'Neill Award and co-author of I Remember My Name: Poetry by Samah Sabawi, Ramzy Baroud and Jehan Bseiso, winner of Palestine Book Award. Sabawi has worked over the years with the Wheeler Centre as a judge for the Victorian Premier Literary Awards, and with La Mama theatre as mentor and member of advisory panel for the Pathways program. Sabawi is currently working with Outer Urban Theatre Projects on the stage collaboration "Vigil" and is about to launch her debut novel Cactus Pear for my Beloved: A Gaza family story.

Friends: I’m so proud to be one of the writers behind *VIGIL* — a powerful, polyvocal theatre work presented by Outer Urban Projects.

Set on a crowded tram, *VIGIL* follows intersecting lives: someone fleeing war, another escaping violence, someone longing simply to walk safely at night, and others quietly witnessing it all. It’s a work about the fragile, urgent question at the heart of our shared lives: *what lives matter? Do our lives matter?*

Created alongside an extraordinary group of artists Bryan Andy Kush Kuiy, Sahra Davoudi and Patricia Cornelius and brought to life under the direction of Iríne Vela, this work is shaped deeply by lived experience, community voices, and a shared commitment to truth-telling.
