Finalmente, esclavizaron y asesinaron a muchos.

¡Guakia Taino, Guakia Ya'abo!

(Somos taínos, aun seguimos aquí)

You can find this print at Galería Boriké in Rincón. "Guasabara" is the Taino word for war or warrior.

The Taino are the indigenous people that discovered Christopher Columbus, a lost European "navigator" leading 3 lost ships looking to find the Indian continent. Instead they found a tribe of peaceful loving people living in paradise.

So, what did the Europeans do upon this "discovery?" Tortured, and forced the Taino to find and bring them gold. They eventually enslaved and killed many. But not all the Taino obeyed or were killed. Those that resisted, organized and went to war.

"Guasabara" was their war cry. Every time they attacked the Europeans they screamed "Guasabara." They came down from the mountains and forests from rivers and caves to wage war with their war cry and their "macanas." They fought and they survived, and the Taino are still here.

Guakia Taino Guakia Ya'abo!
(We are Taino, We are still here)
