Persona 5 Royal is a J-RPG game developed by ATLUS and published by SEGA. It was first released exclusively for the PS4 on the 31st of October 2019 and later got a PS5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC port on October 20th 2022.
It follows the story of our protagonist, Ren Amamiya – a teenage boy who’s been falsely charged with assault and is now in Tokyo on probation for a year. During this time, he discovers a strange power within him which awakens him to the power of “Personas” and lets him change the minds of the corrupt. He later assembles a group known as The Phantom Thieves of Hearts which targets evil people and makes them change their ways.
During gameplay, you can explore a very realistic recreation of Tokyo and meet friends, perform many activities, like shopping and much more. Apart from leading a normal school life, you may explore the minds of your enemies as a Phantom Thief and fight “Shadows” using simple turn-based combat mechanics, which I really enjoyed.
The story is amazing, absorbing and offers a variety of options to make it your own. You can do everything you please (except for attending class, that’s necessary).
The art style of it is fantastic and beautiful in a very original way. It stands out in the grand scheme of the games available today.
Now, one of the best parts - the music. It is absolutely phenomenal and I couldn’t love it more! From chill jazz tunes while walking down the city to extreme rock-like tracks during adrenaline packed fights, it’s great the whole way through.
To sum up, I think that Persona 5 Royal is one of the greatest RPG’s ever and it’s my personal favorite game of all time. Everything in it is great – story, music, art, gameplay, all amazing! I recommend every fan of the genre to try it for themselves, but be prepared, it takes about 100 hours to complete on average.
