Jimmy Greaves Signs Off in Style

April 29, 1961. Stamford Bridge.

With his Chelsea career coming to an end, Jimmy Greaves produced one final masterpiece in blue. Against Nottingham Forest, the striker scored all four goals in a thrilling 4-3 victory, including the effort pictured here as Forest goalkeeper Peter Grummitt is beaten for the second time.

It was Greaves' last appearance for Chelsea before his move to AC Milan. Fittingly, he left the club the same way he had dazzled supporters throughout his career - by scoring goals.

Greaves departed having scored 132 league goals for Chelsea, a club record at the time and a mark of his extraordinary talent.

One final game. Four goals. A perfect farewell.

Who wishes Chelsea had managed to keep him at Stamford Bridge?

How many Azpilicuetas do we need for the Xabi Alonso era?

Back in 2014, Jose Mourinho gave us the ultimate compliment to a player: "I think a team with 11 Azpilicuetas could probably win the Champions League."

He wasn't talking about flair or showboating. He was talking about grit, tactical discipline, and a player who would run through walls because the manager told him to. Azpilicueta was the heartbeat of a winning machine.

Now, with Xabi Alonso coming in to fix a side that just finished 10th, we have to look at the squad we have right now.

If Xabi wants to take us back to the summit of English and European football, he needs soldiers.

How many "Azpilicueta-type" players do we currently have in this squad?

Are we talking 1 or 2? Or is the brutal truth that we have zero?

And more importantly, how many of that breed does Xabi need to bring in this summer to make us a winning machine again? Is it a total overhaul of our mentality, or is there a foundation to build on?

The Docherty Little Diamonds

When this team posed for the camera in 1963, they were the future of Chelsea.

Young, talented and full of promise, they represented Tommy Docherty's vision for the club. Many would go on to become some of the most important figures in Chelsea history, helping to lay the foundations for the successes that followed.

More than sixty years later, that photograph tells a different story.

It is no longer just a team picture.

It is a record of a generation that help build Chelsea.

With the passing of Peter Bonetti, Terry Venables, Eddie McCreadie, and most recently, Bobby Tambling, only four members of that famous group remain with us today:

• Barry Bridges (85)
• Bert Murray (83)
• Ron "Chopper" Harris (81)
• John Dunn (81)

The other fourteen members of the photograph have sadly passed away over the years, including Tommy Docherty himself.

As time moves on, photographs like this become more precious.

They remind us of the men who helped shape Chelsea Football Club into what it would become.

Most of them may not be here with us today

But their contribution to Chelsea's story will never be forgotten.

The Little Diamonds are becoming fewer with each passing year, but their place in Chelsea history remains secure forever.

Up the Chels 💙

"Indecision is the thief of opportunity." — Jim Rohn

Jim Rohn believed that the biggest risk isn't making the wrong decision — it's making no decision at all.

Opportunity doesn't knock and then wait patiently at your door. It knocks once, and if you're still deliberating, it moves on.

The day that changes your life requires one thing above all else: a decision. Not a perfect one. Not a fully-formed one. Just a decision.

"I will." Two of the most powerful words in any language.

What decision have you been putting off?

Dan Petrescu Was a Defender on the Teamsheet. Everything Else Said Otherwise.

There are some players whose position never quite tells the full story.

Dan Petrescu was one of them.

Officially, he was a right-back/ Right Wing Back

In reality, he spent much of his time arriving in places where defenders had no business being.

Ask Barnsley, Southampton or Wimbledon

Or ask the many European sides who spent ninety minutes worrying about Gianfranco Zola and Gianluca Vialli, only for Petrescu to appear unmarked in the box.

That was his gift.

He didn't attack with the recklessness we often see from modern full-backs. His runs had purpose. His timing was exceptional. More often than not, he arrived exactly where the ball was about to be.

Some defenders score goals.

Petrescu seemed to anticipate them.

Looking back, I sometimes wonder whether he was closer to an attacking midfielder than a defender. Not because he neglected his defensive duties, but because he understood attacking football so naturally.

He remains one of the most intelligent players I've seen wear a Chelsea shirt, and one of the most underrated.

As Chelsea supporters, we often celebrate the goalscorers and the entertainers. Petrescu was a bit different.

He made difficult things look ordinary.

Our thoughts and best wishes are with Dan Petrescu and his family during this difficult time.

Did anyone else see Petrescu as more of a right attacking midfielder than a right-back?
