Geosesarma - Vampire Crabs

Geosesarma - Vampire Crabs Page dedicated to crabs of the Geosesarma genus. Vampire crabs are fascinating creatures that we can keep at home as pets but we still know little about them.

On this page you will learn everything about these crabs. My name is Mariusz Olko, I come from Kraków, Poland, and my passion is the crabs of the Geosesarma genus. I have been fascinated by animals since childhood, and my first passion was aquarium, which I developed over the years. I started with a small aquarium, which over time grew into a large 250-liter tank, and more and more animals appeare

d in my home, including reptiles, amphibians, and various invertebrates. In 2016, my attention focused to Geosesarma crabs. It was then that I began breeding the first two species of this genus, which immediately captured my interest and became my specialization. Currently, my collection includes 19 different species of Geosesarma, 11 of which I have successfully bred. I am continually expanding my knowledge and experience in breeding these fascinating creatures. Thanks to running a terrarium shop, I have easy access to a wide variety of vampire crabs, which allows me to continually delve into the subject and expand my collection. In my work, I identify different species that come to me, and I am also the author of species descriptions for crabs that I wrote for one of the leading companies producing aquarium animal food. My experience in breeding Geosesarma allows me to share my knowledge and passion with others, as well as to develop projects that help broaden the understanding of this extraordinary genus of crabs.

With great satisfaction and pride, I would like to announce that after more than a year of intensive work, I have completed my book “Kraby wampiry - Geosesarma.” It is currently available only in my native language and it's purchased exclusively in Poland 🦀

This publication consists of 292 pages and is the result of many years of breeding experience, observations, and my passion for these extraordinary animals. In the book, I have included comprehensive knowledge about keeping crabs of the Geosesarma genus from basic care principles, through detailed information on their reproduction, to practical tips based on my own observations.

A special focus is placed on species descriptions, including both those officially described by science and those that still remain undescribed. This makes it the first publication to document them, even if only to a limited extent. As a result, it is one of the most complete collections of knowledge about Geosesarma crabs available in the world.

All the graphics included in the book were created by me personally, and I have also prepared a poster showcasing the diversity of these crabs.

I am already working on an English version, and I will definitely announce it once it is completed.

A new species of crab has emerged in the hobby, and it appears to be available only in Germany at this time. Little information is available about this crab, but its body structure and similarities to other species suggest it is a climbing crab. Link to the article in the comment ▶️

🦀I have a lot of work outside the topic of crabs, but I’m still writing the book — the subject is so extensive that I keep adding new things to it all the time. In the photo: juvenile Geosesarma sp. Lavender.
Today I selected some juveniles from my breeding setup; young appeared in the following species:
Geosesarma dennerle
Geosesarma hagen
Geosesarma noduliferum
Geosesarma sp. Blood
Geosesarma sp. Tricolor
Geosesarma sp. Vampire Carnaval
Geosesarma sp. White Mandarin
Geosesarma sp. Lavender

🦀More new photos of the scientifically undescribed Geosesarma sp. Fire. Often confused with Geosesarma riani and Geosesarma nigripes. They are found in the hobby, but are currently very rare.

First photos of the species Geosesarma serenei! 🦀Previously only an approximate description of the colors was known.
These crabs are not currently available in trade. They are endemic to Maxwell Hill, Bukit Larut, Perak, Malaysia
The person who photographed this crab told me that he found only one of this species. It was walking around in a termiterum.

A new species of Geosesarma crab has appeared in the hobby. It has not yet been scientifically described. The names that have appeared for it are Geosesarma sp. Lava or Geosesarma sp. Spiderman. I think Geosesarma sp. Lava is more appropriate. So far, it seems that few individuals of this species have entered the trade.

New photos of the species Geosesarma scandens, previously this species was practically not photographed at all. The latest photos show an adult and juveniles.

These crabs are not currently available in trade. They are endemic to Fraser’s Hill, Pahang – Malaysia.

This species was identified by me from photos and the location of its occurrence based on a document written by P.K.L.Ng, 1986

🦀I noticed that there is a lot of misinformation circulating on the internet about vampire crabs of the Geosesarma genus. So I decided to create a website where I will post reliable and extensive information about them.

First of all, I have prepared descriptions of all known Geosesarma species - both those present in captivity and those that are not in hobby, but have been scientifically described and we know their appearance. Many species have not been scientifically described yet, which is why they do not have official names. Unfortunately, sellers and breeders often give them random names, which leads to confusion - sometimes the same name refers to two different species. This phenomenon is harmful both to future scientific research on these crabs and to breeding itself, because mixing species leads to a loss of genetic purity and can cause aggression between individuals in the same tank.
To sort out this situation, I have proposed uniform names in species descriptions. I have also included detailed information on the appearance of individual species and their basic features, which makes them easier to identify. So far, I have described 66 different species!

I have been dealing with Geosesarma crabs for 9 years – I currently breed and reproduce 19 species. I have devoted a lot of time to thorough research to ensure that my descriptions and articles are as reliable and helpful as possible. The website is available in several languages: Polish, English, Spanish, German, French and Russian. Since my native language is Polish, other language versions may contain errors, but I will try to gradually correct them.

I invite you to visit my website and Facebook profile:

A good friend of mine helped me create this website. If anyone would like to create their own website on any topic, I encourage you to contact him. His works can be seen here: https://netmatic.pl/o-nas/ – great contact, professional approach and fast pace of implementation!

Discover the fascinating world of vampire crabs. Learn about their habitat, care, and unique features.
