Did you know there’s a holiday like this today? 😄

If not, no worries - we’ll admit it: until recently, we had no idea what falls on October 17 either.

Besides, from the perspective of an automotive workshop, Repair Day basically lasts all year round. 🔧 After all, the idea of extending the life of parts instead of sending them to the scrapyard is something you put into practice every day.

And while it’s clear that for a professional mechanic, repair work is a trade obligation, it can also be genuinely satisfying. Or at least significantly less frustrating. 😉

So here’s our question: which engines do you enjoy repairing the most? With which power units is the work enjoyable, or at least least likely to raise your blood pressure?

We know, we know - a lot depends on the condition of a specific vehicle. ℹ️ But what we mean are the broader aspects: how well you know a given power unit, its level of complexity, access to components, and the engine design itself. In short, which engines are easier for you to work on than others, even when the fault is quite serious?

We’re looking forward to your thoughts. 😊

Can you do this flawlessly? ✅

In one model, installing the cabin filter is just a matter of lifting the hood and removing the cover. In another, all it takes is lowering the passenger glove box and that’s it. 👍 And in a third one… well, there’ll be plenty of contortions, reaching into places where there’s hardly any room, removing the accelerator pedal, and some decidedly unprintable language. 🤬

Can you match which model has the filter replaced under the hood and where, for installation, you need to reach under the steering wheel?

Each category includes four of the cars listed here. These are vehicles commonly seen on the roads and, as a result, in workshops too, so we’re not throwing any oddball models at you here. But whether you can recall “from memory” where the cabin filter is located in all of these cars is a different question. 😉

Test your knowledge, assign each car to the correct filter location, and see whether you know by heart where to look for the filter in the vehicles mentioned here.

And oh, make sure to let us know which model out of the whole dozen you think has the easiest cabin filter replacement, and in which vehicle it will be the most cumbersome process? 💬

The designers of the brand whose representative we’ve hidden here today liked - at least until the period leading up to this manufacturer’s decline - to go against the grain. ⬅️

And the vehicle we’re looking for here, in the 3.0 V6 version, is a perfect example of this kind of automotive rule-breaking. 😉

Because while a turbocharged 3-liter V6 sounds fairly standard at first (or at least it did in the late 1990s, when this car debuted), things get interesting once you take a closer look at the turbocharging itself. The engineers used a unique asymmetric turbo system here. Instead of boosting all 6 cylinders, they fitted a small turbocharger that supported only one cylinder head in the entire setup. 😮

In theory, this was meant to eliminate turbo lag and make the driving experience smoother. And in practice, this car with that engine did offer a better, more refined driving character. However, the asymmetric turbocharging also caused issues with uneven wear and engine temperature, which increased the risk of failures. 🌡️ Not to mention that the bulky V6 made access to the engine bay much more difficult…

So, do you know which car this unusual engine could be found in? Have you had any experience with this model, or maybe even come across this rare “half-boosted” turbo version? Let us know.

Share your impressions of the brand we’re talking about today as well - unfortunately, it has already disappeared from the automotive map… 😢

A well-performing spin-on oil filter is not just about efficient filtration. Equally important are the valves: properly calibrated, robustly designed and, just as importantly, operating exactly as the vehicle engineer intended. 👍

One of them is the anti-drain back valve. If the filter is mounted at the top or on the side of the engine block, this valve makes sure that after the engine is switched off, the oil does not drain back into the sump. Tight seal? It does the job. Leaky? At the next start, the engine runs practically dry for a moment. ❌

Watch the video and see for yourself how important this mechanism is for the everyday operation of the vehicle and how it performs in the FILTRON OP 613/3 filter compared with a competitive equivalent. ℹ️ We show it based on hard data. 📈

Do you have a repair job — or a specific car model — that you say “No” to in your workshop? ⛔

It’s not an easy topic, but it’s a dilemma that every mechanic probably has to face sooner or later. Of course, the goal is to repair cars and run a business that takes on as many customers as possible, but there are times when taking on a given job raises a lot of doubts, and the most sensible option is sometimes to say “stop.” ❌

The reasons for turning a job down can be different. The amount of work is nowhere near proportional to the potential profit, or the repair is simply not profitable at all; access is absurdly difficult; you don’t have the patience for certain engineering solutions; you don’t have enough experience with that particular vehicle or engine; or there’s a risk that the car will occupy a lift for weeks, while in that time you could comfortably service several other vehicles. 🤷‍♂️

Are there repairs, or even specific vehicle models, that you don’t want to take on in your workshop? What’s behind those decisions? 🤔

Or maybe you’re one of those professionals for whom completing the customer’s job is the top priority, even if it isn’t especially worthwhile for you in terms of either money or time?

Feel free to share your observations and experience. ✒️

When you’re replacing hundreds, or maybe even thousands, of oil filters in the workshop over the course of a year, you probably don’t spend much time thinking about the details of a filter’s design. Above all, it has to work, fit the vehicle it’s being installed in, and perform its job throughout the full service life specified for the part. 👍

That’s understandable. But behind a filter that simply works properly are years of experience and hundreds of hours of testing carried out already during production. We perform them on the OP 616/3 shown here, as well as on other FILTRON products. 🔬

Because when this seemingly simple oil filter is in operation, several processes that are crucial for correct engine performance are taking place inside it at the same time. The oil must flow freely, contaminants should remain in the filter media, and the valves must react exactly when engine operating conditions require it. Not too early and not too late. ⏰

This is especially important during cold starts and sudden pressure changes. Thick oil flows more slowly, and the engine needs lubrication from the very first moments after startup. That’s when details invisible from the outside stop being just an engineering curiosity. They start to determine how quickly the oil reaches critical components and whether the filter can handle temporary load. 🏋️‍♂️ These are the key moments — but also the entire service life of the filter — where factors such as 84% less oil loss through the anti-drain valve, a media that retains twice as much dirt and blocks even the finest particles more effectively, begin to make a real difference in vehicle protection.*

Because thoroughly analyzing and testing every filter element — not just the OP 616/3 — is what makes it possible for you to simply install the filter in your workshops later, confident that it will work exactly as it should.

Without second-guessing or doubts. 😊

Clio with a V6, or the well-known and much-loved Passat B5 with a W8 engine under the hood. Have you had any of those cases in your workshop? 🧐

Which of these popular models in rarely seen versions have come through your workshop?

Although today’s automotive world can be very generic, just a dozen or so years ago it was easy to find unusual variants of fairly standard models. A factory-tuned minivan with 240 horsepower? Absolutely. A European SUV with a 5.0-litre V10 engine? You’ll find one. A small city Toyota that, in its sportier version, could embarrass more than one larger and more expensive car? Of course! 😉

These unconventional versions of very common models were a kind of hidden gem, proving that engineers also like to break away from the usual patterns, and that automotive is not just business or a way to get from point A to point B. It’s also about emotion. 💙

Although, from a workshop perspective, those emotions were probably mixed when, after opening the hood, instead of a humble 1.9 TDI you were greeted by a W8 engine. 😅 On the other hand, servicing such a standard-but-not-quite-standard car is definitely a memorable experience and a chance to learn something new.

Have you worked on a lot of popular cars in unpopular versions in your workshop? Which one from this list is, for you, the perfect mix of madness and restraint? Or maybe you know some other especially noteworthy ordinary models in extraordinary versions that you’ve come across?

The comments section is yours. 🙂

These statistics and charts look pretty good, but that’s not the point of them. ❌

What matters most is that behind every one of these values there is real significance for the vehicle’s operation and protection, as well as for its users. 🚘

That is why we subject all FILTRON filters we develop to controlled laboratory tests. We check every design element under conditions that reflect real-world loads. After all, what matters is not only what a filter can do straight out of the box, but also how it performs under pressure, humidity, temperature, and the gradual buildup of contaminants. 🔬

Because information about a bypass valve activating exactly when required by the vehicle manufacturer, a cabin filter that traps 6 times more harmful gases than a competitor’s equivalent, or an air filter capable of capturing significantly more contaminants* is proof. Proof of the real performance and effectiveness of the part we produce. 💪

Good filtration does not end with a promise. It should be confirmed in tests — and protect even when the driver does not realize how much is happening under the hood and behind the dashboard. ⚙️
